Selecting a Moderator for Your Next Event

Back to blog

2014-10-15

Moderators are often used and are critical in the success of certain types of events. A moderator’s role varies greatly from event to event but often the moderator is tasked with the role of coordinating the speakers in terms of how their material and presentations work together and to moderate Q&A sessions. The moderator keeps things on time and on track while ensuring the audience stays engaged and interested.

Finding the right moderator can be daunting but looking for someone who can fulfill the following criteria is important:

– The moderator should know something about the topic at hand but doesn’t need to be an expert. The important thing is that the moderator does his/her research and is well-prepared on the day.

– A great moderator listens and knows when to shut up. It is important that the moderator doesn’t try to put themselves into focus.

– The moderator keeps things on track in terms of time, tone and topic.

– A great first-hand impression is always a good start. If you have any chance of meeting in person (or at the very least over the phone) you will have a great idea of the moderator’s personality and style. This will also give you a chance to clarify your requirements and concerns to the potential moderator. Should the first impression be less than stellar, perhaps it is a good idea to continue the search.

– The good moderator keeps things short and simple. The moderator should deliver short and accurate intros as well as short questions. This keeps things on target. Long intros and lengthy questions quickly evolves into long answers.

– A great moderator involves the audience from the start (at events where this is desired). If participation is desirable the moderator should not wait till the end to get them involved.

– The moderator rounds things up and thanks everyone involved. The moderator very much sets the tone for the whole event and you want that to be a positive one.
