Gunnar Garfors is the youngest person to have visited every country in the world as a hobby, while maintaining a full-time job. His journeys led him through all 193 UN member countries plus the Vatican, Kosovo, Palestine, Western Sahara, and Taiwan. Building upon his passion for travelling, Gunnar Garfors set 4 additional world records. In June 2012, he set a Guinness world record together with Adrian Butterworth from Britain. They visited five continents in one day, starting in Asia and finishing in South America.
Two of his other world records took place in collaboration with his friends Øystein Djupvik and Tay-young Pak. In September 2014 they accomplished to visit 19 countries in 24 hours by cars and planes. A year later they took the concept to the US where they visited 22 states in 24 hours. Finally, the passionate traveller visited all of Norway’s 19 counties in 24 hours together with his brother Øystein.
Currently, Gunnar Garfors is successfully advising on distribution for an Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation in Oslo. Gunnar is also president of International DMB Advancement Group (IDAG), a digital radio and mobile TV organization with members on 4 continents.
During his career, Gunnar Garfors has been successful in the mobile industry. He was previously CEO of Norwegian Mobile TV Corporation, the company that was the first in Europe to launch mobile TV services via DMB in 2009. Gunnar Garfors also led the world’s first launch of live TV to mobile phones for the Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation in 2004. He is furthermore considered one of the pioneers of a number of other innovative mobile services.
In his writing though, Gunnar Garfors has always remained true to his all-encompassing passion for travelling. His first book 198: How I Ran Out of Countries (198: Mi reise til alle verdas land) was published by Norwegian publisher Samlaget, in September 2014. It came out in English in the US and the UK in 2015. Additionally, he has written articles published in i.e. Afghanistan, Brazil, Germany, the UK and the USA. Garfors writes a bimonthly travel column in the Japanese newspaper Mainichi Weekly.
