Interview with David Powell

What is the message you hope people take away from your presentations?

That they themselves and the people they work with have latent firepower that remains normally untapped – and that by applying the tools and approaches, that I present, back at their work place, they can unleash this untapped enthusiasm, initiative, creativity, teamwork, resilience and persistence to significantly improve sustainable long term performance and results.

How are your keynotes unique?

I cover the 4Ps of business – purpose / passion / plans and persistence. All are vital for long term success. I talk about the power of vision, the need for planning backwards in time from future envisaged success, the tools available to inspire passion and rapport and the hidden keys to demonstrating persistence across the whole organisation. I focus on recognizing, addressing, empowering and inspiring the whole person (body, mind, emotions and spirit) in business.

We all know something about the body, the mind and emotions. The spirit is the core of our being, the essence of who we are and to key to sustained passion and persistence. Over the past 20 years, I have worked with over 200 organisations in 25 countries across 5 continents and I use this global experience with illustrations of how other people and companies have triumphed over adversity and succeeded.

What is the most unique experience you have had as a keynote speaker?

I think it has to be people coming up to me after one of my talks and thanking me and telling me my talk has changed their lives. That is a powerful and humbling experience.

Who or what inspires you most?

What inspires me the most is that so many people out there in the world are really decent people doing their best – and they respond so positively to being given powerfully effective new tools and approaches to make a greater difference at work, at home and in their communities.

What are some of the key factors necessary for a successful team?

An understanding that business is a game and how to play the game as a team to win; an agreed, powerfully motivating vision of future team success; a set of graphical plans linking the team’s  success vision back to present time; a heightened understanding of how to establish and maintain rapport with their work colleagues, especially under times of high stress; an agreed set of “rules of the game” to build and sustain a win/win culture of trust and assertion; a heightened focus on systems to ensure team resilience and persistence and overcome what I call – the aliens of resistance – the potential points of vulnerability and failure that we all must handle..

How does humor play a part in your keynote presentations?

I use examples from my life journey to illustrate how funny some people’s reactions to trying circumstances can be to emphasise the hidden strength of the human spirit when presented with a challenging game of business.
