Our keynote speaker Isabel Suppé encountered a life or death moment in the Bolivian Alps on July 29, 2010. Braving her way across an ice glacier for two days and nights, she managed to save her own life. Today, she gives motivational keynotes about overcoming adversity and one's own perceived limitations.

Isabel Suppé is an author, climber, survivor, and adventurer of German origin and Argentine at heart. She began writing at a very young age and published her first short stories in her early twenties.  She went to school in Germany and France, then won a scholarship to the United States. She also attended Graduate School in Argentina, but decided that she would rather climb mountains than have an academic career.

In July 2010, Isabel was climbing an ice-face in the Bolivian Andes with Peter Wiesenekker. Peter slipped, causing both climbers to fall 1,100 ft. to the bottom of the face. Miraculously, they both survived but were severely injured. They found themselves at 16,000 ft. above sea level in an inaccessible mountain with extremely low temperatures and no means of communication, a broken foot, and a life-threatening loss of blood. Isabel understood that their only chance to live lay in her attempting to cross the glacier by dragging herself over the ice so as to send SOS light signals to base camp. She decided to bet on life, and spent two days and nights dragging herself over the glacier.

Isabel underwent 14 surgeries. In her healing period when she was forced to remain still, she wrote her first book Starry Night (2013) which is soon to be published in its fourth language. It has also been shortlisted for the Desnivel Award of Literature, the Boardman Tasker Prize “for outstanding contributions to outdoor literature” and the ITAS Prize, among others. Her second book Travels with Rocinante: In Quest of Lightness was published in early 2015.

Today Isabel Suppé lives in her tent in the mountains and continues to climb, even though she often needs clutches to do so. She has also crossed the US by bicycle, and hand biked over the Alps, presenting her critically acclaimed books along her way.
