A true entrepreneurial spirit, keynote speaker Sherry Roberts has built and launched some of the most successful technology initiatives in Europe that have gone on to change consumer behavior. Today, she is founder and CEO of The Longest Stay, a successful online interior design magazine and boutique that showcases the finest designs and style from around the world.

Sherry Roberts is a global traveller and the visionary behind The Longest Stay. A pioneering combination of engaging editorial, eclectic products and the ability to purchase online, The Longest Stay is the UK’s first online click and buy interiors magazine.

American by birth but European in spirit, Sherry has hunted the world for luxury, guided along the way by creative personalities and top designers from Versace to David Collins. Having spent many years in Italy, the hub of international design, meeting with numerous design manufactures, Sherry identified the need for an online store that would connect designers, makers and buyers.

Sherry’s love for interiors and the finer things in life started from an early age. As a child, her mother handmade all of her clothes, and Sheryl remembers walking into their home and seeing an array of Vogue patterns half pinned on wonderful textiles that draped delicately on their furniture. Sherry comments, “When I set up The Longest Stay, my dream was to offer a truly one-of-a-kind online shopping experience; a virtual place that brings together the best finds from international design fairs including Salone Del Mobile and Maison & Objet. I am fascinated by the craftsmanship, the history, the quality of materials and the attention to detail of each brand.”

An entrepreneur at heart, Sherry Roberts’ excellent track record also includes senior management and board level positions in telecom, online and technology working for companies such as Symbian (now Nokia), AT&T, and Bertelsmann AG. With a flair for new ideas and founding new trends, Sherry has always led initiatives resulting in major industry movements. During her years with Symbian (2004-2008) she introduced platformisation to network operators, resulting in a valuable Vodafone mandate for approximately 40 million devices annually. Prior to joining Symbian, Sherry was Director of Mobile at Lycos UK Ltd. where she initiated the first “Free SMS” service on the Internet, revolutionising text messaging and attracting over 1.5 million users. In the 90s she worked for Mannesmann Arcor, launching the first “Internet by Call” product, a radically new approach to Internet services, setting the stage for companies like Freeserve to follow.

In 2008 Sherry decided to leave mobile technology to explore other business ideas in the  hospitality sector. In the same year she joined the elite Ecole Hoteliere de Lausanne (EHL), and in 2002 she earned an Executive M.B.A from Otto Beisheim Graduate School of Management and a Business EMBA from Northwestern University in Chicago. Sherry Roberts has also hosted a talk television show on the KKPX channel.

With The Longest Stay, Sherry will continue to source truly unique objects from some of the most prominent international designers and craftsmen. By creating a direct link for shoppers, whilst offering inside stories and background anecdotes of each brand and their talented designer, The Longest Stay is set to become the destination for discerning shoppers and design lovers – the new Net-A-Porter.

Who or what inspires you most?
Self made people that have a big vision for their life, have had difficulties and still make a difference in the world.

Do you have a favourite experience from your speaking career?
When I spoke at the United Nations about the new resolution for International Women and Girls in Science and gave my contribution to over 2 million viewers and 65 countries in the audience.

What types of results do clients experience after your programmes & keynotes?
They feel inspired. I get that time and time again. And they feel they can do what they want and also learn about the reality of being an entrepreneur.

What role has validation had for the development of your career success?
If I didn’t validate my business concept The Longest Stay I would have failed. Meaning if I didn’t give it the time, testing and to really go deep to find the problem I solved I would have launched something superficial and spent my whole time correcting it. Many of my competitors have done this.

Can you give 3 tips for budding entrepreneurs wishing to create an authentic and meaningful brand?

  • Be consistent with how you communicate it to your employees, external partners, and customers.
  • Keep the values of the brand consistent with the way you treat employees, external partners and customers
  • Extend your brand into charity work that represents your personality

If you have a person or a founder that can also bring that brand to life, make sure he or she is also marketed equally – Richard Branson did a huge success with this strategy.
