Keynotes

Keynote by Ida Kymmer:

Cross-cultural communication: a Korean perspective

Directness meets indirectness. Hierarchy meets flat org charts. "Yes" doesn’t always mean yes. Korea sits at a cultural crossroads—a society that has modernised rapidly, yet holds to Confucian codes. Ida Kymmer unpacks the invisible rules that guide Korean communication in business, negotiation, and daily life, drawing on 15+ years of living and working in Korea.

Ida goes beyond surface-level cultural tips to a deep, empathetic understanding: why silence is loaded, how hierarchy shapes who speaks and when, and why relationships precede business. She uses personal stories and cross-cultural research to offer a richer model for navigating Korean professional culture—whether entering the market, building a team, or understanding a colleague.

Audiences leave with a framework for reading Korean communication—and a new appreciation for how cultural context influences interaction. Ideal for global teams, market-entry leaders, and organisations deepening Asia-Pacific relationships.

Korean innovation: a system of speed, failure, and support — far from Silicon Valley

Silicon Valley dominates the idea of innovation, but Korea has built a distinctive ecosystem with different rules. Ida Kymmer explores the culture of ppalli-ppalli (faster, faster), the chaebol’s role in funding moonshots, government backing, and entrepreneurs redefining failure in Korea.

Ida shares stories from Seoul’s startup scene, the labs of Samsung and Hyundai, and the policy rooms of Pangyo Techno Valley to showcase Korea’s unique innovation culture. She urges audiences to look past Western frameworks and ask: what can we learn from Korea’s rapid rise?

Audiences leave questioning assumptions about creativity and its conditions. Essential for innovation leaders, policymakers, and those building or investing in emerging technology ecosystems.

Seoul retail: how Korea became the world leader in retail innovation

A Korean department store is not just shopping—it’s an experience, a social occasion, and a cultural mirror. Korea sets a global benchmark for retail: Olive Young’s beauty ecosystem, Kakao’s seamless commerce and chat, pop-up culture turning drops into events, and live commerce outpacing Western platforms.

Ida maps what turned Seoul into a retail lab: tech-savvy urban population, a globally ambitious beauty and fashion industry, consumers who expect delight at every touchpoint, and technology that makes omnichannel seamless. She explores not just what Korea does differently, but why—and what brands and retailers can borrow, adapt, and be inspired by.

Audiences leave with a clear picture of retail’s direction, seeing Korea as proof of concept. Perfect for retail, e-commerce, brand, and consumer experience professionals looking for new insights.

Korean soft power: from kimchi and skincare to Oscars and BTS

Twenty-five years ago, Korean culture was close to invisible globally. Now, K-pop dominates the music scene, Korean skincare reshapes the industry, Parasite won Best Picture, and "hallyu" marks Korea’s cultural wave. This shift is no accident—it’s the outcome of a sophisticated cultural export strategy that offers lessons for nations, brands, and creative industries.

Ida traces Korean soft power: from government investment in cultural industries to BTS and HYBE's fan ecosystems, turning into community-building masterclasses; from global demand for K-beauty’s "glass skin" to Korean cinema’s international acclaim. She explores tensions—the pressure on performers, debates over homogenization, and what is authentically Korean in global products—because soft power is never simple.

Audiences gain a new lens of cultural influence—and why Korea’s story matters beyond entertainment. A fit for media, marketing, creative industries, and cultural diplomacy audiences.
