“As the president of the Colorado Yale alumni club, I had the pleasure of inviting Professor Feinstein to speak at our annual meeting. The attendees were varied in their careers and interests, and his [presentation showed] creativity and innovation ... as a potential quality in all fields. Rather than a pedantic account of the past, Feinstein offered breakthrough moments of artists, scientists, inventors, and entrepreneurs as patterns that can be observed and emulated.” “Having brought everyone into the creative fold, Feinstein prompted many questions and lively discussion with his presentation, which he approached in a way that made Q&A a vital part of the program. With the increasing rapidity of cultural, economic, and technological shifts, including the rise of artificial intelligence, Feinstein’s analysis of creativity speaks to concerns and curiosity of both specialists and general audiences.

“Across his public lecture and follow-on workshop at the Queensland University of Technology in Australia (Oct 2024), Professor Jonathan Feinstein was exceptionally articulate, combining outstanding clarity and precision with immense cross-disciplinary knowledge. Distilling insights from his research and his two books—The Nature of Creative Development and Creativity in Large-Scale Contexts—he illuminated how creative individuals and organisations develop over time, translating rigorous concepts into practical, immediately usable frameworks grounded in guiding conceptions and guiding principles. Meticulously prepared and highly engaging, he paired thoughtful Q&A with short creative tasks and was warm and approachable during and after both events, energising academics, students, and industry partners.

“Jonathan Feinstein is a rare combination of rigorous scholar and gifted communicator. … He brings clarity to one of the most complex challenges facing organizations today—how to guide innovation through a world overflowing with possibilities. … He has an ability to deliver ideas with energy and precision, making his work accessible to audiences worldwide. Whether presenting to students or executives, he brings a warmth and charisma that draws listeners in and makes them want to engage. … [One of the elements that] sets Jonathan apart is the breadth of his approach. His work reaches beyond business literature, drawing on unconventional sources—writers like Virginia Woolf, scientists like Albert Einstein, Indigenous artists, activists, and technology founders—to illustrate the universality of creative processes.”

Keynotes

Keynote by Jonathan S. Feinstein:

Creativity & Innovation

I discuss creative development and how creative journeys unfold sometimes over years.   The process is rich; and unpacking it helps us appreciate that, although creativity can happen in a flash, there is a lot of groundwork that sets the stage for creative illumination to occur.  I provide a number of stellar examples including Virginia Woolf, Albert Einstein, Twitter founder Jack Dorsey, Steve Jobs, and others.   I also discuss management of the creative process and best practices, drawing on examples from companies, including Apple, Pixar, and SpaceX.

Keynote by Jonathan S. Feinstein:

Creativity: Context, Guidance, and AI

Creativity happens in rich contexts.  These contexts are filled with opportunities but also too large to explore randomly.  Building on my award-winning book Creativity in Large-Scale Contexts I describe how individuals and teams use guidance to find their way and mine the rich opportunities available.  Examples, including Virginia Woolf, Albert Einstein, Indigenous artist Clifford Possum, and Steve Jobs, illustrate the model.  I also discuss the role of AI and the virtual world, including both its promise and present limitations. By understanding how AI can be our partner but also recognizing the unique qualities we as humans bring, we can enrich and further develop our creative potential.

Keynote by Jonathan S. Feinstein:

Creative Development

A common view is that creativity happens in a flash and only a few “geniuses” can truly be creative.  In fact creativity happens through an unfolding creative that everyone can engage in.  By describing this process and providing building blocks and a few key exercises, I help the audience appreciate how creativity is within reach for all of us. I provide a series of examples, both notable creatives such as Virginia Woolf and Albert Einstein, as well as examples drawn from my students and individuals I’ve interviewed.  The takeaway is how to nurture creative development in ourselves and others.
