I got to know Erik when attending one of his seminars at the trade fair Meetings Africa in Johannesburg. Erik is an excellent speaker who knows how to keep the attention of the public without being bored. He inspires and motivates and moves you to think. The subject of the seminar I attended was “Behaviour driven corporate culture and getting out of recessionary thinking”, that turns out to be a recommendation for many of us. After his speech I had the opportunity to speak with Erik and got to know him as a pleasant, positive and enthusiastic person.

Book Erik Vermeulen for your event

Erik Vermeulen is a behavioural strategist, adventurer, and keynote speaker who helps organisations lead through uncertainty by understanding human behaviour. His work centres on one powerful idea: uncertainty itself is not the real challenge. The challenge is how people think, decide, and act when uncertainty appears.

In a world shaped by constant change, disruption, technological acceleration, and AI-driven transformation, leaders often search for ways to create stability. Erik approaches the challenge differently. He helps organisations build cultures and teams that can adapt, collaborate, and perform even when certainty disappears.

By combining behavioural science with lessons from adventure and high-pressure environments, Erik delivers keynote experiences that are practical, thought-provoking, and deeply relevant for modern organisations. His approach goes beyond motivation. Instead of inspiring audiences for a moment, he gives them tools and behavioural insights that create lasting change in how teams operate and how leaders lead.

For more than two decades, Erik has worked with leading brands and organisations, helping them transform complex strategy into behavioural action. His keynotes connect strategy, culture, leadership, and performance through the lens of human behaviour.

The Adventure Mindset

At the centre of Erik Vermeulen’s work is what he calls the Adventure Mindset.

The Adventure Mindset is the ability to stay focused, adaptable, and connected when facing uncertainty. It is about turning disruption into design and fear into focus. Drawing from his experience as an adventurer and behavioural strategist, Erik demonstrates how the same mindset that guides successful expeditions can help organisations navigate change and complexity.

Most leadership speakers focus on courage. Most adventurers focus on resilience and risk. Erik connects these worlds and adds behavioural science to make the insights practical inside organisations and leadership teams.

His keynotes explore questions such as:

  • Why do people react differently under pressure?
  • What creates trust inside uncertain environments?
  • How can leaders encourage contribution instead of compliance?
  • What makes some teams adaptable while others struggle with change?
  • How can organisations create cultures that remain strong during disruption?

Through compelling storytelling and behavioural frameworks, Erik helps audiences understand how performance is directly connected to human behaviour.

Behavioural confidence instead of motivation

One of Erik Vermeulen’s core messages is that performance is not built on motivation alone. People perform at their best when they feel able to contribute, trusted within their environment, and confident in how to respond to uncertainty.

This is where behavioural confidence becomes essential.

Behavioural confidence is the ability to remain steady in chaos, communicate clearly under pressure, and continue making decisions even when outcomes are unclear. Erik helps leaders understand how behaviour influences culture and how culture influences performance.

His keynote presentations challenge traditional leadership thinking by showing that high-performing cultures are not created through control or certainty. They are created through trust, understanding, and shared behavioural principles.

Audiences leave with practical insights they can apply immediately in leadership, collaboration, communication, and change processes.

Leadership in a changing world

Organisations today face rapid transformation. AI, shifting market conditions, digital acceleration, and changing employee expectations continue to reshape how businesses operate. Erik Vermeulen helps leaders navigate these realities without becoming paralysed by uncertainty.

His presentations are particularly valuable for organisations working through:

  • Change management
  • Cultural transformation
  • Leadership development
  • Team performance
  • Innovation and adaptability
  • Decision-making under pressure
  • Human-centred leadership
  • Psychological safety and trust

Rather than offering simple answers, Erik equips leaders with frameworks to better understand behaviour inside their teams and organisations. He explains why uncertainty often creates hesitation, resistance, or fear — and how leaders can respond in ways that strengthen performance instead of weakening it.

His approach resonates with executives, leadership teams, entrepreneurs, and organisations looking to create resilient cultures in fast-changing environments.

A keynote experience that connects and challenges

Erik Vermeulen is known for delivering keynote experiences that combine energy, intelligence, humour, and practical relevance. His presentations connect behavioural science with real-world leadership challenges in a way that feels accessible and actionable.

He brings stories from adventure into the conference room, translating experiences from uncertain environments into lessons for leadership and organisational culture. His ability to combine adventure psychology with behavioural strategy creates a keynote style that stands apart from traditional leadership speakers.

Audiences appreciate Erik’s direct communication style and his ability to challenge assumptions while keeping sessions engaging and relatable. He does not focus on hype or empty motivation. Instead, he creates clarity around what actually drives trust, contribution, and performance in modern organisations.

Whether speaking to global corporations, leadership summits, innovation conferences, or strategy events, Erik Vermeulen delivers insights that help people rethink uncertainty and lead with greater confidence.

Why organisations book Erik Vermeulen

Organisations book Erik Vermeulen because he helps people understand the human side of performance in uncertain times. His keynotes combine behavioural science, leadership insights, and adventure-based thinking to create meaningful impact long after the event ends.

When leaders understand behaviour, they become better at building cultures that adapt, collaborate, and thrive under pressure. Erik helps organisations move beyond fear of uncertainty and instead use uncertainty as a catalyst for growth, innovation, and stronger leadership.

For companies looking to strengthen leadership, improve culture, and prepare teams for a rapidly changing future, Erik Vermeulen delivers a keynote experience that is both inspiring and highly practical.

Erik and I worked together on a project for a major telecommunications company in Kenya. The process required 300 workshops for 3500 staff across the country in 4 months. To meet the clients’ objectives we were forced to work quickly, be innovative in our solutions and provide laser like focus. Erik proved to be invaluable in the process. The level of energy he brings to an engagement is unsurpassed. Erik was able to “roll with the punches” and adapt to changing requirements. Furthermore, his ability to understand the client and be sensitive to their needs was very helpful. I would happily work with Erik in the future and highly recommend him

There’s a Shark in the Vending Machine

Erik Vermeulen has been a business consultant and on the International Speaking circuit since 1999.

A renowned Behavioural Economics Strategist, Erik offers a transformative presentation that unlocks the secrets of human decision-making. This insightful talk equips sales and marketing professionals with powerful tools to understand and influence customer choices, driving business growth and success. This presentation examines the how psychology and Behavioural Economics influences decision-making.

Behavioural economics strategist Erik Vermeulen uses his engaging style and unique insights into behaviour and decision-making to illustrate and explore the biases that skew our perceptions of the world around us. He has two decades of consulting experience and sits on the faculty of the Johannesburg Business School as a lecturer in the Executive Education track on behavioural economics.

We all consider ourselves to be rational human beings making reasonable decisions in our daily lives. But social scientists assert that this is rarely the case – that our decisions (with our time, our money, our attention, and our relationships) are indeed truly rational. Rather, we make emotional decisions and then try to rationalise them afterward. When we’re faced with complex decisions, our brains are wired to take shortcuts, and our feelings get in the way.

Tailor-made for each audience, Erik looks at the cognitive and emotional biases that affect our seemingly rational decision-making and shape our behaviour. He examines these from the viewpoints of both consumer and producer of information and applies these principles to marketing, customer engagement, customer experience, sales and even employee engagement.

Understanding the power of behavioural economics in shaping behaviour and results is more important than ever in providing insights into your company’s approach to marketing, sales, customer experience and internal culture.
