The keynote speaker Jim Morris (“The Rookie”) is one of the top entertaining inspirational and motivational presenters. His testimony shows the power of dreams and how they can transform human life.

Born 1964, into a nomadic military family, our speaker Jim Morris moved 29 times during his childhood. This experience, as well as his difficult relationship with his father, made Jim insecure, withdrawn and caused difficulties in his transition to adulthood. The two things that kept him going was his love for baseball that earned him respect from others wherever the family went, and his relationships with his grandfather, Earnest Morris, who was his role model. However Jim still struggled with decisions and even failed as a professional player because of immaturity and injuries.

After retiring baseball, Jim went to Texas where he got a degree in Kinesiology and psychology. Following this he became a science teacher and high school baseball coach. He also got married and started a family. Jim loved his job and family but was struggling with issues of unfulfilled potential and happiness.

Coaching his Texas high school baseball team he experienced an epiphany, and realized he was too focused on himself rather than helping others. Jim buried himself in his work, and threw batting practices to his rag tag team who encouraged him to try out for a big league club. He made a bet with the team: If they won the district championship, he would try out for a big league team. With the kids winning the district championship, Jim also fulfilled his end of the bet, and at a try out threw 12 consecutive pitches at 98 miles per hour. In merely 3 months, the high school teacher and strong-willed speaker Jim Morris, was striking out big league hitters. This dramatic change in his life made cinematic history with the release of “The Rookie” starring Dennis Quaid; the Disney blockbuster about chasing dreams and keeping your promises. The movie won ESPY for sports film of the year, as well as being voted one of the five greatest baseball films ever made.

Jim Morris has been a speaker for over 10 years and has participated in prestigious events such as The Million Dollar Round Table. His Cinderella story is living proof that one’s life can transform 180 degrees if you put others first and find a mentor in life. Jim no longer lives in silence, and is the best inspirational speaker around. Our speaker Jim Morris draws on his own life experience to inspire others to become mentors and leaders in their own lives and to chase their dreams. Audiences are charmed by his sensor of humor, and he receives standing ovations wherever he goes.

Interview with Jim Morris

What is the message you hope people take away from your presentations?
I want people to walk away knowing that anything is possible. No matter what obstacles we face, we can overcome and persevere.

How are your keynotes unique?
My keynotes are unique because I do not put myself above anyone. I am one of them. I converse with the audience instead of speaking down to them. I take people up and down emotionally and send them away knowing and feeling that anything and everything can be accomplished, no matter the obstacles.

Who or what is your biggest source of inspiration?
My grandfather Ernest is my biggest source of inspiration. He is the major component of the 1st third of my speech. The lessons he taught me are invaluable, not only to business people, but to every person: Respect, character, discipline, honesty and grace are all representations of my grandfather.

Why do you believe it is important to be able to laugh at yourself?

We need to laugh at ourselves for several reasons:

  • 1) So we can remember that we are not the center of the universe
  • 2) So that we do not take ourselves too seriously
  • 3) Because we are going to make mistakes and, if you can laugh about it and move on, we are more productive and well rounded.

What is your best advice for effective leadership?
Surrounding yourself with really good people, who are like minded, is great for business people. Keeping your life balanced between business and the rest of your life will make you more productive in business. The lessons my grandfather taught me are (see #3) are also great for effective leadership.

What do you feel that others can learn from your life story?
Dreams are possible, no matter how unlikely others see it. No one believed in me other than my high school students.
