Johanna Hooper – leadership shaped by experience

Johanna Hooper’s leadership perspective has been forged through more than 25 years of leading people in demanding environments. Keynotes

Keynote by Johanna Hooper:

How to Build Personalised Resilience

Resilience is often reduced to generic advice that sounds good but rarely changes behaviour. In this keynote, Johanna challenges the idea of “one-size-fits-all” resilience and instead helps leaders understand what resilience really looks like for them as individuals. Drawing on her experience in the Royal Navy, including a real-life incident involving a sinking ship, Johanna explores how stress shows up differently for each leader and how leadership behaviours shift when pressure is at its highest.

The session combines personal reflection with practical frameworks, helping leaders diagnose the real sources of stress and respond with strategies that are realistic, sustainable, and effective when it matters most.

Audience takeaways:

  • How to identify their personal stress triggers and pressure points

  • Why generic resilience advice often fails in high-pressure roles

  • Practical ways to strengthen resilience that fit their leadership style

  • Insight into how leadership behaviour changes under extreme pressure

  • Tools to lead more calmly and decisively when situations escalate

Lessons in Risk Management from a Sinking Ship

Risk management looks very different in theory than it does when everything starts to go wrong. In this keynote, Johanna again draws on her experience in the Royal Navy, using the same sinking ship incident to explore how leaders perceive, assess, and respond to risk when time is short and consequences are real.

Johanna challenges traditional approaches to risk, showing how fear, assumptions, and hierarchy can distort decision-making. This session helps leaders recognise how their own risk mindset shifts under pressure and how to build decision-making processes that hold up when the stakes are high.

Audience takeaways:

  • How risk perception changes when leaders are under pressure

  • Common decision-making traps that appear during crises

  • Techniques for clearer thinking when information is incomplete

  • How to balance speed and judgement in high-risk situations

  • Lessons that translate directly from crisis environments to business leadership

Audience takeaways:

  • The essential conditions that enable teams to perform at their best

  • How leadership behaviour directly impacts team culture and results

  • Early warning signs that a team is starting to underperform

Keynote by Johanna Hooper:

So You Want to Be a Dragon

Inspired by the women of Dragon’s Den, this keynote is designed for female leaders who want to succeed without pretending to be someone they’re not. Johanna explores how leadership expectations are often shaped by outdated norms, particularly in male-dominated industries, and how women can navigate these dynamics authentically and confidently.

Rather than promoting a single leadership style, this session encourages leaders to define success on their own terms, drawing on their strengths, values, and ambitions.

Audience takeaways:

  • How to develop a leadership style that feels authentic and effective

  • Greater confidence in navigating male-dominated environments

  • Insight into common leadership myths that hold women back

  • Practical strategies for influence without compromise

  • Inspiration to lead boldly while staying true to themselves

Strengths-Based Leadership

Many leaders are taught to fix their weaknesses, often at the expense of their strengths. In this keynote, Johanna reframes leadership development by focusing on how leaders can work with what they naturally bring to the table. She pays particular attention to strengths that are often misunderstood, such as introversion and neurodiversity.

This session helps leaders see perceived challenges in a new light and understand how diverse leadership styles can be powerful when recognised and supported.

Audience takeaways:

  • A clearer understanding of their personal leadership strengths

  • How to leverage introversion and neurodiversity effectively

  • Why focusing solely on weaknesses limits leadership impact

  • Ways to build teams that value and use different strengths

  • Increased confidence in leading without trying to fit a mould

Your Leadership Shadow

Every leader casts a shadow, whether they intend to or not. In this keynote, Johanna helps leaders understand how their behaviour, decisions, and emotional responses shape the environment around them. Often, the biggest influence a leader has is unspoken.

This session creates awareness of how leadership style impacts motivation, trust, and performance, helping leaders recognise whether their shadow is helping their team thrive or quietly holding them back.

Audience takeaways:

  • Awareness of the impact their behaviour has on others

  • Insight into how unintentional signals affect team performance

  • Tools to adjust leadership style for greater positive influence

  • How to align intent with impact as a leader

The Future of Work

The world of work is changing rapidly, and leadership approaches must evolve with it. In this keynote, Johanna explores how demographic shifts, societal expectations, and technological change are reshaping what employees need from leaders.

  • A clearer understanding of key forces shaping the future workforce

  • How leadership expectations are changing across generations

  • What leaders need to rethink in their talent strategies
