Oswald Rodrigo Pereira
Oswald Rodrigo Pereira is one of the most prominent Polish-Portuguese voices in modern high-altitude storytelling. His path began far from the Himalayas, in a television newsroom where he spent twelve years reporting on politics, economics and sports. The turning point arrived when he joined a Polish winter expedition to K2 as a TV correspondent. The raw intensity of life at extreme altitude reshaped his ambitions, leading him to leave journalism and dedicate himself fully to filmmaking and climbing. Since then, his work has centred on the emotional journeys, inner battles and human stories behind Himalayan expeditions.
Climber with a rare approach
Across the past seven years, Oswald has taken part in ten expeditions, including two winter attempts on K2. He has summited Broad Peak, Annapurna, Dhaulagiri, Makalu and Kanchenjunga, climbing without supplementary oxygen or Sherpa support. His experiences include high-risk descents, dramatic weather shifts and the mental discipline required to function in the world’s most hostile environments. During his descent from Broad Peak, he assisted in a rescue operation on the Chinese side of the ridge, an event that marked him deeply and strengthened his commitment to responsible climbing and solidarity on the mountain.
Rescue missions and extreme teamwork
In spring 2023, after summiting Annapurna and Dhaulagiri, Oswald and his climbing partner, Bartek Ziemski, joined the high-altitude rescue of 84-year-old Spanish climber Carlos Soria. Operating in thin air with limited time and resources, the mission demanded precision, trust and coordination, qualities that have since become central themes in Oswald’s talks. The past two years have seen Oswald and Bartek develop into an exceptional duo. Their sports-style ascents combine speed, stamina and mutual reliance: Bartek skis down the mountains while Oswald documents their route and the psychological challenges they face.
Filmmaker driven by human stories
Oswald’s shift from journalism to filmmaking brought a new depth to his storytelling. He uses the camera not only to capture landscapes but to reveal the mental and emotional weight of high-altitude decisions. His latest documentary, The Silent Escape, premiered in South Korea in October 2023 and has since been screened in more than twenty countries, receiving recognition on both national and international stages. His films stand out for their honest portrayal of fear, motivation and survival, elements that mirror the realities faced by teams and leaders far beyond the mountains.
