From Naval Officer to Formula 1 Leader

Sebastian Sheppard’s path to becoming a high-performance expert began far from the racetrack. A native of Chile, Seb grew up in Santiago before embarking on a career defined by challenge and transformation. His early leadership journey started in the Royal Navy as a pilot, flying anti-submarine helicopters and leading teams in complex, high-pressure missions. Working alongside the Spanish and Chilean Navies, he developed a rare combination of technical expertise, cross-cultural understanding, and the ability to lead under intense pressure.

Before his military service, Seb spent two years on expeditions through the remote landscapes of Patagonia. These formative experiences shaped his view of resilience not as endurance, but as adaptability and mindset. This foundation set the tone for a career dedicated to helping others lead with purpose, courage, and clarity.

Leadership at the Pinnacle of Performance – Formula 1

Seb’s leadership journey took a new direction when he entered the world of Formula 1, one of the most competitive and technically demanding environments in the world. At Alpine F1, he led a team of more than 150 engineers responsible for the rapid design, development, and delivery of F1 race cars. Every millisecond mattered, and every decision carried the weight of global competition.

In this environment, Seb learned that true high performance isn’t about perfect systems it’s about people. He built a culture where technical excellence was driven by psychological safety, motivation, and trust. His leadership philosophy is clear: empowering people to perform at their best requires connection, clarity, and belief. Through these principles, Seb helped cultivate a world-class team capable of thriving under relentless pressure.

Transforming Organisations and Cultures

Beyond Formula 1, Sebastian has held influential roles across the aerospace, defence, and technology sectors. As Head of Transformation & Integration at Altran (now Capgemini) UK & Northern Europe, he directed post-merger integrations across multiple high-tech industries. His people-first approach ensured that the value of innovation and expertise was protected during organisational change a process often marked by uncertainty and complexity.

At Airbus, Seb led the A400M Wing Final Assembly Line in Seville, Spain, managing complex production challenges and overseeing a successful operational turnaround. These experiences equipped him with a unique perspective on managing large teams, driving transformation, and leading through adversity.

Keynotes

Keynote by Sebastian Sheppard:

Fundamentals of High-Performance Teams

Defining and Understanding High-Performance Teams in Complex Programmes: Explore what constitutes a high-performance team, beyond individual talent, emphasizing collective skills, diverse perspectives, and complementary strengths to achieve challenging goals. Discuss the shift from individual accomplishments to shared credit and how teamwork and intelligence win "championships" in major programmes.

The Three Pillars of High-Performance Teams:

  • Purpose: Define how a clear, shared purpose or mission acts as the "North Star" for any programme, connecting individual roles to the bigger picture and inspiring engagement.
  • Positive Engagement: Investigate how positive engagement with the programme's purpose, with each other, and with leadership is critical, stressing the importance of leaders building relationships and investing time in their teams.
  • Communication: Focus on establishing clear, simple, and effective communication channels, emphasizing two-way dialogue, active listening, and transparency to bind teams together and provide visibility of the larger programme objectives.

Strategic Leadership in High Performing Teams

Defining and Understanding High-Performance Teams in Complex Programmes: Explore what constitutes a high-performance team, beyond individual talent, emphasizing collective skills, diverse perspectives, and complementary strengths to achieve challenging goals. Discuss the shift from individual accomplishments to shared credit and how teamwork and intelligence win "championships" in major programmes.

  • Leader vs. Manager: Distinguish between leading people (inspiring, motivating, building relationships, empowering, coaching) and managing processes (organizing, planning, overseeing operations, controlling budgets). The course would highlight the importance of being a leader in programme management, especially in high-performance environments.
  • Vision and Strategy in Dynamic Environments: Teach how to develop a clear, compelling vision that inspires action in fast-paced settings, adapting plans rapidly while maintaining long-term goals.

Keynote by Sebastian Sheppard:

Vision, Strategy, and Alignment in Time-Critical and Dangerous Environments

Start by establishing the importance of a clear, singular objective.

  • F1 Analogy - The single-minded goal of an F1 team is to "make the car go faster" and win the championship. Every decision, from engineering design to budget allocation, is measured against this core objective. This contrasts with common business projects that often lack a clear, shared vision.
  • Military Analogy - In military operations, the mission is everything. Special forces units have a clearly defined objective, and every team member understands their role in achieving it. This ensures all actions are aligned toward a common goal, even under extreme duress.

Key Topics:

    • Defining the North Star: How to articulate a clear, compelling vision for a major program.
    • Strategic Alignment: Ensuring all sub-projects, teams, and stakeholders are aligned with the overarching program objective.
    • Resource Allocation: Making tough decisions about where to invest resources based on the strategic vision.

Keynote by Sebastian Sheppard:

High-Speed Decision-Making & Risk Management

Major programs, like F1 races or military operations, operate in dynamic, high-stakes environments where decisions must be made quickly and accurately.

  • F1 Analogy: A pit stop is a masterclass in high-speed, synchronized execution. The team must rapidly diagnose the situation (e.g., tire degradation), execute a flawless plan (the pit stop), and adapt to new information (e.g., a competitor's pit stop). This demonstrates the need for prepared plans, clear roles, and rapid communication.
  • Military Analogy: Special forces operators are trained to act decisively with incomplete information. They use contingency planning (Plan A, B, and C) and adapt to the "fog of war" by relying on trust, disciplined execution, and clear communication.

Key Topics:

    • Rapid Decision Cycles: Using real-time data and clear frameworks to make fast, effective decisions.
    • Contingency Planning: Preparing for a wide range of scenarios to build resilience into the program.
    • Risk and Opportunity Management: Proactively identifying and mitigating risks while also exploiting unexpected opportunities.

Continuous Improvement & Iterative Cycles

High-performance teams don't just execute; they constantly learn and adapt.

  • F1 Analogy: An F1 car is never "finished." Throughout the season, teams use a feedback loop of data analysis, simulation, and on-track performance to introduce constant upgrades. They apply agile principles, long before the term was common, to design, test, and deploy new parts in short, iterative sprints.
  • Elite Sports Analogy: Elite athletes and teams engage in a continuous cycle of performance, analysis, and refinement. A post-game analysis, or "retrospective," is a critical ritual for identifying what worked and what didn't, leading to targeted training and strategy adjustments..

Key Topics:

    • The "Design-Build-Race-Optimize" Cycle: Applying a continuous feedback loop to major programs.
    • Learning from Failure: Creating a psychologically safe culture where failures are seen as opportunities for learning.
    • Retrospective Practices: Implementing structured reviews to identify lessons learned and improve future performance.

Keynote by Sebastian Sheppard:

Culture, Leadership, and Team Cohesion

The success of high-performance teams is built on a foundation of trust, discipline, and a shared culture.

  • F1 Analogy: The team principal's role is to cultivate a culture of excellence and trust among engineers, strategists, and mechanics. The ability to "double-stack" cars in a single pit stop, for example, is a direct result of the immense trust and synchronization built through countless hours of practice.
  • Military Analogy: Mission Command is a core military leadership principle that emphasizes giving subordinates clear intent and letting them determine the best way to achieve it. This builds trust and empowers small, decentralized teams to adapt to local conditions.

Key Topics:

    • Psychological Safety: The role of leaders in building an environment where team members feel safe to speak up, challenge ideas, and admit mistakes.
    • Decentralized Decision-Making: The role of leaders in building an environment where team members feel safe to speak up, challenge ideas, and admit mistakes.
    • Recruitment and Retention: The importance of selecting people not just for their technical skills, but for their ability to contribute to a high-performance culture.
