Engineer, inventor and climate entrepreneur shaping the future of resilient energy.

Ugwem Eneyo is a Nigerian-American engineer, inventor and climate entrepreneur known for advancing energy technology and resilience across emerging markets. As the founder and former CEO of Shyft Power Solutions, she developed patented AMI technology that helped redefine how microgrids and smart-city systems operate in Africa. Today she serves on the Board of Directors at Steama Company, guiding Product and Innovation after leading Shyft’s acquisition. Her story blends technical depth, global field experience and a personal connection to climate challenges in the Niger Delta.

Ugwem Eneyo – Speaker

Ugwem Eneyo stands out as one of the most prominent voices in climate innovation and resilient energy systems. A Nigerian-American engineer, inventor and entrepreneur, she has shaped the direction of microgrid and smart energy technologies in Africa’s rapidly expanding tech ecosystem. Her expertise is grounded in rigorous engineering training, global regulatory work and the lived experiences that sparked her early interest in environmental affairs.

As the founder and former CEO of Shyft Power Solutions, Ugwem built a venture-backed company recognized for pioneering IoT-driven tools and integrated software that improved the performance and reliability of microgrids. She created the original technology as part of her MS/PhD work in Civil and Environmental Engineering at Stanford University, turning her research into practical systems that addressed real infrastructure challenges. Her technical contributions led to patents that became the foundation for Shyft’s advanced metering infrastructure (AMI), helping utilities and developers manage distributed energy in new, more adaptive ways.

From Research to Real-World Impact

Ugwem’s path into entrepreneurship began when she saw the potential of Africa’s rising tech sector and recognized the opportunity to build energy tools designed for the realities of fast-growing cities. After winning the MIT Clean Energy Prize, she committed fully to the venture, guiding Shyft through early deployment, product scaling and the successful raise of more than $1M in venture capital—an accomplishment that placed her among the early Black female founders to reach that milestone in the climate space. Her hands-on approach, from system design to field implementation, helped position the company as a meaningful contributor to Africa’s clean energy transition.

Her leadership eventually guided Shyft Power Solutions into its acquisition by Steama Company. Today, Ugwem serves on Steama’s Board of Directors and leads Product and Innovation, advancing next-generation solutions that support resilient power systems. This role allows her to continue shaping the future of energy technology while influencing strategy across a broader ecosystem.

A Career Informed by Global and Personal Perspective

Before Stanford, Ugwem worked as an Environmental and Regulatory Risk Advisor for infrastructure projects spanning South Asia, Africa and the Americas. These experiences deepened her understanding of how environmental pressures, policy frameworks and community realities intersect. Her early life and family roots in the coastal regions of the Niger Delta also shaped her interest in sustainability. Growing up connected to a region marked by environmental complexity, industrial challenges and human rights concerns gave her a personal lens through which she views climate issues today.

Her academic foundation began at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, where she earned a degree in Civil and Environmental Engineering. From there, she built a profile that blends technical knowledge with entrepreneurial instincts and a commitment to meaningful impact.

Recognized Leader in Climate and Innovation

Ugwem has been featured on Forbes 30 Under 30 in Energy and honored by Women of Renewable Industries and Sustainable Energy, among several recognitions highlighting her contributions. She is widely respected for demonstrating how engineering-driven solutions can be brought to market in ways that support both innovation and equity.
