About Chess

  • We do not know the exact origins of chess – some say China, some say Persia – but we do know for sure that chess is a very old game indeed.
  • Chess is played with a board of 64 black and white squares. Each player starts out with 16 pieces but it is indeed possible to take each other’s pieces so that in most games there will be (considerably) fewer pieces left at the end of a game.
  • Chess is a game that focuses on great strategic and analytic skills and it is often considered a battle of intellects. This may be one reason why chess even today, hundreds of years after its invention, is still held in very high esteem.
  • Keynote speakers on chess take a closer look at the game of games, its many facets, its famous players and much more.
