What makes people trust a leader, connect with a purpose or change the way they think and act? For Ash Bhardwaj, the answer often lies in the stories we tell and the actions that bring those stories to life.
Ash Bhardwaj is an award-winning journalist, author, filmmaker and keynote speaker who has spent his career exploring how storytelling influences human behaviour. Drawing on 20 years of journalism, military leadership and strategic communications, he helps organisations understand how the right stories can build trust, strengthen culture and inspire meaningful change.
Through engaging keynote talks and interactive workshops, Ash brings together experiences from conflict zones, military operations, international journalism and academic research. His message is clear: effective storytelling is about what we say, what we show and what we do.
Ash's career has taken him around the world, working with organisations including the BBC, Sky, Condé Nast Traveller, The Telegraph and The Times. As a journalist, filmmaker and presenter, he has built relationships with communities from Nepal to New Zealand, earning their trust and sharing their experiences with international audiences.
His reporting has also taken him into some of the world's most politically complex regions. He travelled 8,500 kilometres along Russia's European border, including Donbas and occupied Crimea, to investigate Russian interference in neighbouring countries. He journeyed 2,500 kilometres along the India-Pakistan border to explore the lasting legacy of conflict and undertook a 1,000-kilometre walk through Uganda and Sudan to understand the effects of civil war and climate change.
As a defence and security analyst for Monocle and The Spectator, Ash makes complex geopolitical and military developments accessible to wider audiences.
These experiences have taught him how stories create connections across cultures, challenge assumptions and influence the way people understand the world. They also form the foundation of his approach to strategic storytelling.
Alongside his journalism career, Ash Bhardwaj has served for 14 years as an officer in the British Army Reserve, reaching the rank of Major. He has led teams of up to 120 people through military operations and organisational change programmes, gaining firsthand experience of the relationship between leadership, communication and trust.
During five years at the Centre for Army Leadership, he developed research and training designed to strengthen leadership across the British Army. His work examined how stories shape organisational culture and how leaders can use their words and actions to inspire loyalty, confidence and commitment.
Ash has also worked in information operations and delivered influence campaigns in contested environments in the UK and Middle East. Following these experiences, he completed a master's degree in Strategic Communications, focusing on Ukraine and examining how nations use strategic storytelling to influence behaviour and cultural change.
For Ash, leadership communication is about creating a shared understanding of why something matters. His keynotes demonstrate how leaders can use stories to connect people with a common purpose, particularly during periods of uncertainty and transformation.
Every organisation has stories that influence how people think, work and make decisions. The challenge is understanding which stories matter and how to communicate them effectively.
Ash Bhardwaj translates his experiences and research into practical lessons that leaders and teams can apply to their everyday work. His keynote talks and workshops explore how storytelling can become a powerful tool for communication, engagement and organisational change.
Audiences discover how to:
Use strategic storytelling to communicate purpose, values and direction with clarity.

Ash Bhardwaj's fascination with human motivation is also central to his writing. His debut book, Why We Travel: A Journey Into Human Motivation, explores the deeper reasons people travel and what those journeys reveal about human nature. The book was named The Independent's "Best Travel Book of 2024".
Beyond his writing and reporting, Ash is a master's lecturer in journalism at City University London, a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society and a member of the British Guild of Travel Writers. He also judges several literary awards.
An experienced presenter and storyteller, he chairs events at the Hay and Cheltenham festivals and hosts The Moth, bringing his understanding of narrative and audience engagement to the stage.
