Performance coach to Max Verstappen, driving elite results through science, resilience and winning mindset.
Bradley Scanes is a high-performance physio and coach known for shaping champions in some of the world’s most demanding sporting arenas. As performance coach to four-time Formula 1 World Champion Max Verstappen, Brad played a central role in building the physical, mental and recovery strategies required to win at the highest level. With a foundation in sport science and physiotherapy, he brings an evidence-based approach to developing resilience, adaptability and a winning mindset. Today, Brad translates elite performance principles into powerful insights for leaders, teams and organisations aiming to perform consistently in fast-changing, high-pressure environments.
Bradley Scanes has built his career around one clear mission: helping individuals perform at their absolute best when the pressure is highest. As a high-performance physio and coach, he has supported world champions, Olympic gold medallists and elite athletes across multiple disciplines. His work blends sport science, hands-on coaching and real-world experience from the pinnacle of global sport.
Brad is widely recognised for his role as performance coach to Max Verstappen between 2019 and 2024. During this period, he oversaw every aspect of Verstappen’s physical preparation: conditioning, physiotherapy, nutrition, recovery and sleep. His structured and evidence-based methods contributed to multiple race victories and one of the most intense championship battles in Formula 1 history.
The partnership culminated in the dramatic 2021 title victory, where Verstappen overtook Lewis Hamilton on the final lap of the final race to secure his first World Championship. It was a defining moment in modern motorsport and a testament to preparation, composure and resilience under extreme pressure.
Working inside Red Bull Racing, Brad operated at the heart of a high-performance environment where marginal gains determine outcomes. Formula 1 drivers face extraordinary physical and cognitive demands: sustained G-forces, heat stress, rapid decision-making and global travel schedules.
Brad’s responsibility extended far beyond gym sessions. He developed integrated systems covering:
Physical conditioning tailored to the unique stresses of Formula 1
Injury prevention and physiotherapy
Nutrition strategies for performance and recovery
Sleep optimisation across time zones
Mental resilience and adaptability during championship campaigns
This holistic framework ensured that performance was sustainable across long seasons and high-stakes races. The lessons learned in this environment now form the backbone of his keynote presentations, where he shares practical strategies for thriving in fast-moving, competitive industries.
Brad holds a BSc in Sport & Exercise Science and an MSc in Physiotherapy. He began his professional career in the UK’s National Health Service, developing a strong clinical foundation before transitioning into elite sport.
His experience spans UFC, boxing, football and cycling, giving him insight into a wide range of performance cultures and physical demands. He has also supported Team GB basketball and Team GB gymnastics, playing a role in helping Max Whitlock achieve Olympic and World Championship gold medals.
Working across these disciplines strengthened Brad’s understanding of what separates good from exceptional. It is rarely a single breakthrough moment. Instead, it is the consistent execution of small, deliberate habits combined with mental resilience and adaptability.
In 2024, Brad expanded his work from Formula 1 into broader motorsport and endurance racing. He now serves as a human performance consultant for Honda Racing Corporation, collaborating with Acura MSR in IMSA and IndyCar. His work includes supporting teams at iconic events such as the Indy 500 and the Daytona 24 Hours.
Brad also works with Toyota Gazoo Racing and supports junior drivers competing in the USF2000 series. Across these programmes, he applies the same structured performance systems developed at the highest level of Formula 1, adapted to different racing formats and team dynamics.
