Julien S. Bourrelle – Cultural Differences & Communication Across Borders
Organisations operating internationally often face challenges when people from different cultural backgrounds approach communication, leadership and decision-making in different ways. What feels natural in one culture may seem confusing or inappropriate in another.
Keynote speaker Julien S. Bourrelle helps organisations understand these differences, explain how to adapt in order to create robust teams and turn cultural diversity into a strength rather than a barrier.
Through clear explanations and relatable examples, Julien shows how cultural misunderstandings arise and how organisations can address them early. When teams understand each other’s perspectives, expectations and intentions, communication improves and collaboration becomes more efficient.
His presentations are designed for leaders, HR professionals and international teams working in global companies. Many organisations invite Julien during mergers, acquisitions, international expansion or when strengthening collaboration between offices in different countries.
From Engineering to Cultural Analysis
Julien’s expertise comes from 20 years of hands-on experience living a variety of culture, 15 years on stage developing his unique approach and extensive academic reading. Julien is educated as a mechanical engineer with a specialisation in astrodynamics, or rocket science.
His education brought him to several countries including Canada, Germany, Spain, France, Australia, New Zealand and Norway. Living in different environments exposed him to a wide range of social norms, communication styles and professional expectations.
Beyond these countries, Julien has also spent extended periods in Southeast Asia, East Asia, East Africa, North America and Europe. These experiences gradually developed into a deeper interest in how cultures influence behaviour and interaction across borders.
Today, Julien explains cultural differences through concrete examples drawn from real situations in international organisations.
The Beginning of His Work on Cultural Differences
Julien’s work explaining cultural differences began during his time at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), Norway’s largest university for engineering education.
He was elected to the university’s board of directors, representing part of the academic staff and becoming the first non-Scandinavian member since the university’s foundation in 1910.
In this role, he helped strengthen the university’s internationalisation processes. Drawing on his experience from five internationally recognised universities where he had studied, he contributed international perspectives to discussions about education and collaboration.
During this time, Julien also began developing a visual way of explaining cultural expectations. What started as a way to illustrate his own experiences later became a powerful communication tool used in his presentations today.
