Julien S. Bourrelle – Cultural Differences & Communication Across Borders

Organisations operating internationally often face challenges when people from different cultural backgrounds approach communication, leadership and decision-making in different ways. What feels natural in one culture may seem confusing or inappropriate in another.

Keynote speaker Julien S. Bourrelle helps organisations understand these differences, explain how to adapt in order to create robust teams and turn cultural diversity into a strength rather than a barrier.

Through clear explanations and relatable examples, Julien shows how cultural misunderstandings arise and how organisations can address them early. When teams understand each other’s perspectives, expectations and intentions, communication improves and collaboration becomes more efficient.

His presentations are designed for leaders, HR professionals and international teams working in global companies. Many organisations invite Julien during mergers, acquisitions, international expansion or when strengthening collaboration between offices in different countries.

From Engineering to Cultural Analysis

Julien’s expertise comes from 20 years of hands-on experience living a variety of culture, 15 years on stage developing his unique approach and extensive academic reading. Julien is educated as a mechanical engineer with a specialisation in astrodynamics, or rocket science.

His education brought him to several countries including Canada, Germany, Spain, France, Australia, New Zealand and Norway. Living in different environments exposed him to a wide range of social norms, communication styles and professional expectations.

Beyond these countries, Julien has also spent extended periods in Southeast Asia, East Asia, East Africa, North America and Europe. These experiences gradually developed into a deeper interest in how cultures influence behaviour and interaction across borders.

Today, Julien explains cultural differences through concrete examples drawn from real situations in international organisations.

The Beginning of His Work on Cultural Differences

Julien’s work explaining cultural differences began during his time at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), Norway’s largest university for engineering education.

He was elected to the university’s board of directors, representing part of the academic staff and becoming the first non-Scandinavian member since the university’s foundation in 1910.

In this role, he helped strengthen the university’s internationalisation processes. Drawing on his experience from five internationally recognised universities where he had studied, he contributed international perspectives to discussions about education and collaboration.

During this time, Julien also began developing a visual way of explaining cultural expectations. What started as a way to illustrate his own experiences later became a powerful communication tool used in his presentations today.

Culture & Cultural Codes

How Culture shapes Behaviours.

Through his entertaining stories and illustrations, Julien will make you reflect on how your culture influences you more than you think. Julien explains in simple terms what culture is, how differences play out, and how they affect us. He talks about behaviours, rituals, norms, role models and values. The audience learns to be more aware of their own perceptions and expectations, and the perceptions, expectations and intentions of others.

Julien S. Bourrelle is an international keynote speaker and intercultural communication expert who helps organisations operating across cultures, whether integrating international teams, expanding into new markets, managing post-merger integration, or strengthening global leadership. His lecture improves cross-cultural communication and provides practical tools to build trust, align expectations, reduce cultural misunderstandings, create stronger collaboration and lead across borders in multinational teams.

Communicating across cultures - lowres.jpg

The audience learns to communicate more effectively within multicultural environments and to be more aware of how their behaviours may be (mis)interpreted and how values are interpreted differently across cultures. Participants leave with concrete tools that can be applied immediately in everyday professional situations. Julien customises his lectures for HR leaders, People & Culture departments, senior executives, middle managers and broader employee audiences — from small leadership groups to large international conferences and company-wide events.

Julien uses real-life stories from his international life together with his well-known series of illustrations drawn by Elise H. Kollerud, making his lectures and courses easy to understand, engaging to listen to, and easy to remember. He speaks across Europe and internationally and is trusted by global organisations working across borders.

While most of Julien's work focuses on cultural concepts linked to national culture and cultural differences in business, he can also connect cultural dynamics to socio-economic groups, age groups and gender perspectives.

Cultural Differences

When organisations merge, acquire companies abroad or expand into new markets, understanding general cultural theory is often not enough. Leaders and teams need insight into the particular expectations, perceptions, communication styles, decision-making processes, values and workplace norms of the country they are entering. Julien offers tailored lectures that compare concrete national and business cultures, helping participants understand how cultural differences play out in practice.

These sessions help organisations anticipate friction, avoid misinterpretation and adapt leadership styles to local expectations. By clarifying differences early, organisations reduce costly misunderstandings, strengthen integration processes and improve collaboration and performance across borders. The lectures are particularly relevant for international management teams, multinational leadership teams, HR departments and leaders responsible for cross-border integration.

The analysis draws on Julien’s approximately 50 cultural themes, including meetings, feedback, negotiation, trust, independence, reporting, decision-making, leadership, scheduling, communication, rule adherence and collaboration.
