From athlete to survivor
Before the events of March 22, 2016, Karen Northshield was living an active and ambitious life. The Belgian-American graduated from the Université Libre de Bruxelles with a degree in International Relations and a minor in foreign languages. Fluent in English, French, Dutch and German, she built a successful career as a personal trainer and fitness instructor while preparing to compete in a Ms. Bikini competition.
Everything changed in a single moment.
On the morning of March 22, Karen arrived at Brussels International Airport, unaware she was standing next to one of the suicide bombers responsible for the terrorist attacks. When the bomb exploded, she suffered devastating injuries that would change her life forever.
The explosion left her with an open pelvis, severe internal injuries, extensive wounds throughout her body and countless life-threatening complications. In an instant, she went from being a healthy athlete to a survivor carrying injuries more commonly seen on a battlefield.
Defying every prediction
Karen was rushed to the largest hospital in Brussels in critical condition. Doctors believed she had virtually no chance of surviving.
What followed was an extraordinary fight for life.
She spent nearly four years in hospital, battling countless life-threatening infections caused by the explosion and its aftermath. Throughout her recovery she underwent more than 60 operations and continues to live with hundreds of fragments from the bomb still inside her body.
Against every prediction, Karen survived.
More remarkably, she chose not to let tragedy define her future. Instead of remaining a victim, she rebuilt her life step by step, turning unimaginable hardship into a message of hope, courage and resilience.
Today, Karen stands as a symbol of perseverance and demonstrates what is possible when determination, purpose and hope overcome fear and adversity.
