Louisa Heinrich – Putting people at the heart of innovation

What does it take to build a successful business in a world where technology constantly changes the rules? For Louisa Heinrich, the answer starts with people.

Louisa Heinrich is an innovation strategist, human-centered design expert and speaker with nearly three decades of experience shaping digital products, services and business strategies. Since 1997, she has worked at the forefront of technological change, helping organisations understand what emerging technologies mean for their customers, employees and long-term success.

Her career reads like a history of the internet. Together with her teams, Louisa has conceptualised and delivered pioneering digital experiences, including online banking platforms, vehicle configurators, catch-up TV and streaming services, interactive healthcare research, online tax filing and digital newspapers.

These experiences have given her a distinctive perspective on how technology changes behaviour, how businesses adapt and why understanding people remains essential to meaningful innovation.

In her keynotes, Louisa Heinrich explores how organisations can approach change with greater confidence, challenge established assumptions and create solutions that make a genuine difference.

From experience design to better business decisions

Throughout her career, Louisa has helped develop and evolve empathy-driven methods within Experience Design. Her work has gradually expanded from creating better digital experiences to designing better businesses and improving the way existing organisations operate.

She believes sustainable success comes from finding the right balance between three essential considerations: human needs, commercial ambitions and technological possibilities.

In 2013, Louisa founded Superhuman Limited, a consultancy dedicated to helping organisations make better decisions about what they do and how they do it. Her approach brings business strategy, technology and experience together to help companies make informed decisions at pace.

Through Superhuman Limited, she supports organisations in developing products, teams, processes and working practices that generate commercial value while improving people's experiences.

A natural pattern spotter and big-picture thinker, Louisa connects emerging developments with practical business opportunities. Her collaborative, adaptable and hands-on approach helps organisations move from ambitious ideas to meaningful action.

Making AI and emerging technology work for people

Artificial intelligence presents businesses with new opportunities, but adopting technology successfully requires more than enthusiasm for the latest tools.

Louisa Heinrich helps organisations examine where emerging technologies such as AI can create real value and how they can be introduced in ways that serve both people and business objectives.

Her perspective is grounded in decades of experience navigating technological transitions. Having worked through successive waves of digital innovation, she understands the importance of asking the right questions before committing to a particular solution.

How will a new technology improve the customer experience? What needs to change within the organisation? How can teams make better decisions while keeping human considerations central?

Louisa encourages leaders to look beyond immediate technological possibilities and consider the wider implications for their products, people and operating models.

For audiences exploring AI adoption, digital transformation or the future of work, she offers a strategic perspective on turning technological potential into sustainable business value.

Global experience with Fjord, Ford and international brands

As Global Head of Strategy at the international service design agency Fjord, now part of Accenture Song, Louisa Heinrich played an important role in shaping the agency's strategic direction.

She authored Fjord's popular annual Trends publications, contributed to groundbreaking and award-winning projects and redesigned the agency's offering to prepare it for the future.

Her work has also taken her into the automotive industry. At Ford Motor Company, Louisa led research and development of a long-term, human-centered vision for the future of passenger vehicles globally.

The project involved translating insights about human needs into a strategic vision while co-creating the processes, teams, methods and mechanisms required to help the organisation take practical steps towards that future.

Across her consulting career, Louisa has worked with organisations in technology, media, finance, healthcare, automotive and consumer goods.

Her clients have included AtlasNXT, BBC, BBVA, Bonnier, Citibank, Daimler, Eli Lilly, Ericsson, the European Commission, Ford, Founders Factory, General Motors, Nokia, Parrot Analytics, Procter & Gamble, ProSiebenSat.1, Smart Design, Tyson and United Airlines.

This broad industry experience allows Louisa to identify patterns across sectors and bring fresh thinking to complex business challenges.

Helping leaders and teams think differently

Alongside her consulting work, Louisa Heinrich has mentored and coached designers, executives and founders across the United States and Europe. She has also contributed to numerous published books and papers, sharing her experience and perspectives on design, innovation and business transformation.

Her approach combines curiosity, strategic clarity and a willingness to challenge conventional thinking. She is an experienced collaborator who enjoys exploring what comes next while remaining focused on what organisations can achieve today.

For Louisa, innovation is ultimately about making better choices. That means understanding people's needs, recognising opportunities, building the right capabilities and creating the conditions for new ideas to succeed.

Her insights are particularly relevant to organisations facing technological disruption, rethinking their business models or looking to embed human-centered thinking into their strategies and everyday operations.

Keynotes

Keynote by Louisa Heinrich:

Inhuman Systems

We seem to be increasingly trying to compel humans to think and behave like machines, rather than developing systems (digital and analog) that provide support for the way humans operate.

AI is just the most recent example.

How might we shift perspectives and stop trying to run every business (and indeed society) like it's a factory?

Keynote by Louisa Heinrich:

Freedom in the Digital Age

When much of the modern digital world was conceived and designed, it was understood that to engage with digital products and services was optional - there was always another option for those who weren’t comfortable in that world.

Now, in an increasingly broad set of contexts, there is no choice - whether you choose it or not, technology (and the decisions of those who make and run it) has a profound impact on almost every facet of your life.

One of the things this has eroded is our ability to choose what we want to do and how we want to do it.

How can human autonomy and freedom be re-injected into this system?

How can we be responsible for our decisions when we seem to have so little choice?

Keynote by Louisa Heinrich:

Tiny gods and false idols

We have a deeply ingrained tendency to anthropomorphise technology, and also to trust it more than we trust our own knowledge and intuition, because we are taught that it is science and therefore more objective and correct.

But this is not entirely true, and it’s definitely not a productive way of thinking about technology.

If we are to develop a healthier relationship with it (as individuals or as businesses), we need to develop a healthier way of thinking about it.

Life in the Hype Lane/ Pathfinding through a rapidly shifting landscape

Business leaders and workers, students and consumers are all increasingly pressured to adopt new technologies, whether they actually bring benefits or not.

How might we do better at engaging with the promises and disappointments of technology?

This is often a question of how much tech influences our behaviour, individually and societally, and how much our behaviour can or should influence the direction of tech.

Not Dead Yet

How to build a better business and solve the right problems.

This one is all about what business taught me about cancer, and what cancer taught me about priorities.

This is a breakdown of my 5 critical activities that all successful businesses engage in (which are also the 5 most common problems that businesses have).

I have delivered this to business audiences and am also writing a book for cancer patients and caregivers.

This is referred to in Marcus Brown’s testimonial below.

How not to get conned

A framework for assessing, evaluating and making decisions about the tech that runs your life, your family, your business and your society.

Particularly good for non-technical executives and middle managers under pressure to blindly adopt new tech (like AI), or expected to deal with its fallout.
