AI expert, Adjunct Professor & strategic advisor who turns 30 years of data & analytics into honest, hype-free insights

Geertrui Mieke De Ketelaere is Adjunct Professor at Vlerick Business School and a recognised expert in artificial intelligence with a rare 360° view. With a master’s degree in civil and industrial engineering and a specialisation in robotics and AI, she has spent more than 30 years working on data and analytics at multinationals such as IBM, Microsoft, SAP and SAS. As a Strategic Advisor, she defines the AI business canvas from potential value to predefined risks and often acts as an expert and coach behind the scenes.

From AI research to the rise of digitalisation

After her initial engineering studies, Mieke left for New Zealand to start a PhD in AI in the Computer Science Department at the University of Auckland. AI was booming at the time, and she enjoyed exciting years writing research papers and travelling around the world to share her work. Her PhD journey ended earlier than planned due to a misalignment between her academic belief and the medical world, which was at the centre of the research.

Switching from a PhD position to a private IT career was the logical next step. It turned out to be more interesting than expected. The internet arrived, digitalisation was born and the race for ICT talent began. While digital technologies accelerated, AI went into a “winter sleep”. Mieke spent years at major software companies, building strong experience in data, analytics and large-scale IT environments. When AI re-emerged, she was uniquely positioned with both academic foundations and hands-on industry expertise.

AI summer, platform players & a new responsibility

With the growth of major platform players, AI entered a new “summer”. What had started as a rigorous academic discipline was increasingly turned into a marketing buzzword, with all the associated risks. At SAS, Mieke combined for 10 years her IT knowledge with her passion for AI, helping organisations implement real-world systems rather than slideware.

In 2019, she decided to return fully to her AI roots by taking up the role of AI Director at imec, a top research company famous for nanotech and digital solutions. There, taking ownership of the future AI roadmap and translating AI between engineering and business became her full-time focus. She helped connect cutting-edge research with practical business needs, ensuring that innovation did not lose sight of real-world constraints and ethical considerations.

Author, self-reflection & responsible AI

In March 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic changed almost every aspect of daily life. For Mieke, the lockdown accelerated a process of deep self-reflection. The idea of writing a book to demystify AI was already on the table, but the global pause turned it into an intense, personal journey. She asked herself difficult questions: Had she focused too much on the profit that AI systems generate? Had she thought enough about the impact on people and planet? Had engineers made enough effort to translate AI in a transparent, accessible way?

The result was a book that strips away the hype around AI and explains the technology in clear, human language. The Dutch version was launched in November 2020, followed by three translations into French, English and German. In her writing, as in her talks, Mieke insists on balancing innovation and responsibility, showing how AI can create value while remaining transparent and aligned with societal needs.

Keynote themes with Mieke De Ketelaere

In her keynotes, Mieke brings three decades of experience to the stage with energy and clarity. Typical angles include:

  • Demystifying AI: what it really is, what it is not, and why the hype can be dangerous.
  • Building an AI business canvas: from potential value and data needs to predefined risks and governance.
  • Hindsight, insight and foresight of AI: lessons from past projects, current best practices and future trends.
  • People, planet and profit in AI projects: how to design systems that respect human and environmental impact.
  • Translating AI between research, engineering and business: creating a shared language across domains.

Her style is direct, accessible and honest. She connects technical depth with real stories from industry, academia and policy work, and she is not afraid to challenge easy assumptions about AI.

Recognition, media presence & how she works today

In recognition of her work, the State Secretary of Digitalisation, Mathieu Michel, appointed Mieke as “Digital Mind” in 2020. In 2024, she was named “IT Person of 2024” in Belgium. Today, she continues to share her vision on the future of AI as a speaker on international radio, television and conferences, where she is often invited to explain complex topics in a way that non-experts can follow.

Mieke now builds bridges between business, research and government in the domain of AI as a Strategic Advisor and Adjunct Professor. She helps organisations design AI strategies that go beyond short-term profit and take into account people, planet and long-term resilience. Leaders come to her for a realistic view of AI: what is possible today, what remains out of reach, and how to prepare for what is coming next.

Book Mieke De Ketelaere for your event if you want a speaker who understands both the code and the boardroom, and who brings a grounded, hype-free perspective on AI, digitalisation and the responsibilities that come with them.

The 25% Barrier: How to Unlock the AI Value

AI is everywhere, yet only 25% of companies are truly unlocking its value. The open question is: Why hasn’t this number moved, even with all the progress we’ve made in the past years?

The answer is simple: Because success isn’t just about tools, it’s about rethinking how people and technology work together. It is about going beyond the logical thinking, into creative and critical thinking. AI and AI agents hold promise, but without redesigning processes and clarifying human leadership, impact stalls.

Leading companies don’t just deploy, they reshape, reinvent, and invest where it truly matters. This keynote explores not only the latest insights, but also foresights into where AI is heading next.

The audience will examine both the value and the limitations of the latest AI technologies. They’ll gain clarity on where human leadership is irreplaceable and reveal the deeper transformation required to turn AI into lasting impact.

AI & the Banality of Evil

In this new keynote, Mieke explores the "Banality of Evil" in the context of the recent AI companion chatbots powered by generative AI.

To the audience, it will become clear that the loneliness epidemic in society, combined with uncontrolled AI development, can lead to harmful interactions with chatbots. Mieke's current observation of self-delusion in certain AI development teams raises new concerns at the level of transparency and responsibility needs in the dislocated AI supply chain.

The potential toxicity in the solutions in combination with the search for artificial intimacy by vunerable end-users is highlighted and emphasizes the need for more accountability, proper regulation and oversight.

At the end, Mieke will draw parallels to the regulation of other industries in the past, suggesting that next to the urgent need of multi-disciplinary teams also well-funded and well-staffed regulation agencies are necessary to address the challenges posed by AI companion chatbots in order to protect society in the future.

Keynote by Mieke De Ketelaere:

In AI we Trust ... or not?

It is a fact. Machines with common sense that actually understand what’s going on, just like we humans do, are far more likely to be reliable, and produce sensible results, than those that rely on statistics alone. But let’s be clear: these systems don’t exist yet and there are a few other ingredients we will need to think through first together.

Trustworthy AI has to start with good engineering and business practices, mandated by laws and industry standards, both of which are currently largely absent. Too much of AI thus far has consisted of short-term solutions, code that gets a system to work immediately, without a critical layer of engineering guarantees that are often taken for granted in other fields. Do we currently have design procedures for making guarantees that given AI systems work within a certain tolerance, the way an auto part or airplane manufacturer would be required to do? No.

The assumption in AI has generally been that if it works accurate enough to be useful, then that’s good enough, but that casual attitude is not appropriate when the stakes are high. But this time of over now.

The European Commission has put guidelines in place for trustworthy AI. 7 amendments have been defined. Do you know them? Have you acted upon them as a business or as an engineer?

This session will take you to the current state of the art information on the requirements for trustworthy AI. It will highlight the current pain points and deliver insights on potential solutions in order to make sure that you can take up your accountability as business owner and developer now and in the future.

Keynote by Mieke De Ketelaere:

Me, myself and my AI

For the successful adoption of AI, we need more female leaders. Why? Well, as AI projects succeed on 4 factors (data, technology, people and processes), women normally possess the right qualities to lead projects to build real-world AI products more successfully as they fully master the enablement of an environment for collaboration and inclusion.

John Naisbitt once said: “The most exciting breakthroughs of the twenty-first century will not occur because of technology, but because of an expanding concept of what it means to be human”. This seems odd in the world of artificial intelligence full of robots and automated machines, but when looking more closely at what’s currently needed to increase AI adoption, it all makes sense.

In order to solve the above challenges of AI adoption and in order to build more successful AI products, we need to focus on a more collaborative and community-driven approach. How can we create an environment which takes into account opinions from different stakeholders, especially those who are under-represented? What is limiting us from creating a multidisciplinary debate around our AI solutions? What is needed to have access to AI translators at different levels?

In this session Mieke will share her personal views on what’s needed to work more holistically, outside of our own comfort zones. She'll share her view on how to create the right environment where we look beyond gender, race, and cultural background. Based on a set of personal examples, Mieke will analyse what’s needed both at educational and company level to create a shift in mentality towards more collaboration. It will be a call for more role models to stand-up, male and female, in order to build a better future with AI.
