Sister Zeph is a globally recognized educationist, women’s empowerment leader, and the 2023 Global Teacher Prize Laureate. Her life’s work is rooted in one clear mission: to make education accessible to every child and to empower women to lead independent, dignified lives. Her journey began at just 13 years old, when she founded a free school in the courtyard of her home for disadvantaged children. While still a child herself, she made a defining decision—to work so other children would not have to, and could instead receive an education.
Without access to formal schooling or tutors, Sister Zeph pursued her own education independently. Through self-directed learning and extraordinary discipline, she earned two Master’s degrees from the University of the Punjab as a private student. Her path reflects deep resilience and an unwavering belief in the power of knowledge. For 17 years, she maintained an intense routine, often working up to 20 hours a day while balancing three demanding roles: teaching children for free, earning a livelihood to sustain her school, and continuing her own studies.
Alongside educating children, Sister Zeph extended her mission to women in her community. She provided free vocational and life skills training, enabling women to achieve financial independence and support their families. Her efforts have empowered more than 6,000 women, helping them break cycles of poverty and dependence. Through education and practical skills, she has created pathways for women to earn, grow, and lead with confidence.
Sister Zeph’s early life was shaped by adversity. At the age of three, she narrowly escaped a life-threatening situation rooted in harmful beliefs about girls within her extended family. Despite these beginnings, she transformed her circumstances and, 27 years later, became the most educated woman in her family. Her life stands as a powerful example of how resilience and purpose can rewrite even the most difficult narratives.
Her work has delivered tangible, lasting impact:
These achievements have earned her international recognition. In addition to the Global Teacher Prize, she has received the Lynn Syms Prize for her contributions to women’s empowerment, along with numerous national and global honors.
