A Caltech Bren professor of Computing Mathematical Sciences, Anima Anandkumar is one of the most influential female figures of her generation. Her contribution to technology, specifically AI and machine learning, is phenomenal. Among her outstanding works include discovering ways to use tensor algorithms in building statistical models. Prior to publishing her most-cited work on tensor decomposition in 2014, tensors were little known. The opposite is the situation today- tensors now seem to be everywhere in artificial intelligence today.

Specifically, she has been vocal against selling face recognition services to law enforcement agencies. In her view, the technology still needs more refining to deliver accurate results. Anima was also at the forefront of the #ProtestNIPS campaign, which ensured the rebranding of the Neural Information Processing Systems, now known as NeurIPS.
