Bob Judson is a professional keynote speaker, leadership facilitator and executive coach with more than 45 years of experience across defence, government and consulting.
Military, government & corporate experience
Bob Judson’s perspective on leadership has been shaped by more than 45 years of experience across defence, government and consulting, often in environments where information is incomplete and decisions have real consequences.
He joined the Royal Air Force at 18 and became a fast-jet pilot, completing more than 100 operational missions over Iraq and Bosnia and accumulating over 3,500 fast-jet flying hours. During his aviation career, Bob flew the Jaguar, German RF-4E Phantom and Eurofighter Typhoon, as well as the historic Spitfires and Hurricanes of the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight.
His career progressed through increasingly senior leadership appointments. Bob commanded RAF Coningsby as the station introduced the Eurofighter Typhoon and, in 2006, led the formation of nearly 50 aircraft for Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II’s 80th birthday flypast.
These experiences gave Bob first-hand insight into the preparation, teamwork and trust required when people are expected to perform consistently in demanding environments.
Command under pressure
In 2008, Bob commanded Kandahar Airfield in Afghanistan, a complex multinational operation involving approximately 25,000 military and civilian personnel from around 20 nations and some 170 aircraft.
Leading within this coalition environment required him to create clarity across cultures and organisations, establish accountability, delegate effectively and make critical decisions amid constant operational demands.
Bob later served at the Pentagon as the UK Chief of the Defence Staff’s liaison officer to the Chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff during a busy period of operations in 2011.
He was subsequently appointed Assistant Chief of the Defence Staff (Operations), providing strategic oversight of UK military operations around the world. In this role, Bob regularly briefed senior ministers and the Prime Minister, adding another dimension to his experience of strategic leadership and communication at the highest levels.
From military command to business
After retiring from the RAF as an Air Vice-Marshal in 2015, Bob joined Deloitte LLP as a Director. His work focused on crisis management, organisational resilience and complex transformation, helping major organisations prepare for and respond to uncertainty and disruption.
During the Covid-19 pandemic, Bob was asked by the Permanent Secretary to No10 Downing Street to support the Cabinet Office Covid-19 Task Force.
His career across military command, government decision-making and corporate consulting gives Bob an unusual perspective on how leadership changes across different environments. He understands that lessons from military operations cannot simply be transferred directly into business and instead focuses on the principles that remain relevant across organisations.
Today, Bob works internationally as a keynote speaker, leadership facilitator and executive coach. He is a regular facilitator at Deloitte University EMEA and hosts the weekly Leading 4 Life “Stories” podcast.
