While companies say they are committed to gender diversity, women remain underrepresented at every level of most corporations. According to McKinsey & Company’s Women in the Workplace 2018 study,“Women are dramatically outnumbered in senior leadership. Only about 1 in 5 C-suite leaders is a woman, and only 1 in 25 is a woman of color.”

As a woman of color and seasoned executive, Heather Younger increases your audience’s understanding of their increasingly diverse workforces with humor and enthusiasm. She has earned a reputation as “The Employee Whisperer” for her ability to connect and motivate.

Interview with Heather R. Younger J.D.

How did you begin your speaking career?
I have been training teams and leaders for some time now. I always enjoyed sharing my knowledge with others who might benefit. My first formal speaking opportunity was at a marketing conference in Las Vegas, Nevada. It was a ton of fun, and I was able to learn from those in the audience.

What are three habits for success?
Persistence, resilience and active listening are my three keys to success. I learned at a very early age that falling down just provides another opportunity to get up and keep moving forward. Also, I consider myself to be empathic and I use active listening to uncover the needs of others and help them move to a better place.

Who or what inspires you most?
My children inspire me most. I have four children. I learn endless lessons from them. For example, one of mine believes in positive affirmations and speaks his reality to make it happen in advance. I have another who is determined to succeed regardless of her personal setbacks. I just receive so much from being their mother.

What types of unique experiences have you had as a result of your profession?
First and foremost, I am an employee advocate. In that role, I get to facilitate employee focus groups and help them uncover what they need from their leaders in order to be and remain engaged. I also get to present findings to executive leaders and work with them to make make change happen. I feel blessed to speak to audiences, big and small and help change their mindsets.

Why do clients typically hire you to speak?
They hire me to speak on topics of leadership, culture transformation, employee engagement and emotional intelligence. I typically speak at corporate conferences, leadership retreats and association meetings. They are looking for knowledge, solutions and inspiration.

What would you like to achieve in the next 5 years?
Complete peace of mind that comes from financial freedom, a strong faith, a clear plan and a family who loves me.
