Jo Salter – A pioneering force in aviation
Jo Salter MBE made history as the Royal Air Force’s first female fast jet pilot, marking a turning point in a traditionally male-dominated field. Joining the RAF at just 18, she initially pursued a path as an engineering officer at the Royal Military College of Science. A shift in RAF policy opened the door for women to fly jet aircraft, and Jo seized the opportunity with determination.
In 1992, she earned her wings, quickly progressing through the demanding stages of fast jet training. By the end of that same year, she had completed the rigorous programme required to fly frontline aircraft. Her skill, discipline, and focus led her to the cockpit of the Panavia Tornado, one of the RAF’s most formidable jets.
Her appointment as a Flight Lieutenant with the renowned 617 Squadron cemented her place in history. This was more than a personal milestone. It reshaped perceptions, challenged long-standing barriers, and created new possibilities for women in aviation and beyond.
Leadership under pressure
Operating in high-performance, high-risk environments shaped Jo’s approach to leadership. As a fast jet pilot, every decision carried weight, and every mission required precision, teamwork, and trust. These experiences form the foundation of her leadership philosophy today.
Jo understands what it takes to perform when the stakes are high. She brings practical insight into decision-making under pressure, maintaining clarity in complex situations, and leading teams through uncertainty. Her time in an all-male squadron further strengthened her adaptability and ability to lead with authority and authenticity.
Her talks connect these lessons directly to business challenges, offering audiences tools they can apply immediately in their own organisations.
Inspiring the next generation
Beyond her operational role, Jo made a lasting impact through her work with Air Cadets. Leading Air Experience Flights, she introduced young people to aviation while sharing her knowledge and passion for the armed services.
This role reflected her commitment to developing others and creating opportunities for future generations. Her ability to inspire is grounded in real experience, making her message both relatable and powerful.
Transition to business and PwC
After leaving the RAF, Jo successfully transitioned into the corporate world, bringing with her a unique combination of discipline, analytical thinking, and leadership experience. She held senior roles across organisations including NetConnect, Automated Power Exchange, and Saltin Ltd.
Today, she serves as Director of Global Transformative Leadership at PwC. In this role, she works with organisations navigating change, helping leaders build resilience and drive transformation. Her ability to translate military experience into business relevance makes her perspective both distinctive and highly valuable.
