Four-time Olympic medalist and sailing icon Marit Bouwmeester shares powerful lessons on mental strength, resilience and performing under pressure.
Marit Bouwmeester is one of the most accomplished sailors in Olympic history. With four Olympic medals – silver in London 2012, gold in Rio 2016, bronze in Tokyo 2021 and gold again in Paris 2024 – she has built an extraordinary career defined by discipline, determination and mental strength. Alongside her Olympic success, she has claimed four world championship titles and five European championship titles in the Laser Radial class.
Beyond her achievements on the water, Marit Bouwmeester brings audiences inside the mindset required to perform under extreme pressure. As a mother to her daughter Jessie Mae and co-author of a book with Professor Nico W. van Yperen, she combines personal experience with insights from sports psychology. Her talks explore how individuals and teams can strengthen their mindset, stay focused on their goals and unlock their full potential.
Keynote by Marit Bouwmeester:
What do you do when everything is uncertain? When winning matters, but focusing on winning holds you back?
It all starts in your mind. With focus. And with taking control of what you can influence. Marit Bouwmeester, the most successful female sailor of all time, takes you into the world of mental resilience, personal growth and taking charge of your own path. She shows that it’s not talent but your mindset and your ability to focus on what’s controllable that determine whether you excel.
In her powerful keynote, she translates the world of elite sport and science into the reality of organisations. She uses sailing as a metaphor to talk about focus, letting go and dealing with setbacks. With stories grounded in sports psychology and scientific insights, she challenges you to rethink what it means to perform under pressure. Her message is clear: you can’t win if you lose in your head. Winning is an inside job.
This keynote is inspired by her book Winnen met je hoofd(Winning with Your Mind) and offers an inspiring and honest look behind the scenes of elite sport - with concrete lessons on how to keep control, even when everything around you is shifting.
