“Where some see challenges I see opportunities”

Yusuf has been on both sides of the struggle to strengthen America’s most vulnerable neighborhoods.

As a teenager, he operated a network of drug houses before being sentenced to prison for 10 ½ years. After his imprisonment, during the depths of the financial crisis, he became an unlikely real estate investor and affordable housing advocate. This was in response to the onslaught of foreclosures in his neighborhood. Eventually, Yusuf grew to have portfolio of over 200 affordable housing units. He was even elected as president of the largest apartment owners trade association in the state of Wisconsin.

In 2017, speaker Yusuf Dahl graduated from Princeton University. Where he obtained his master’s degree in urban development and public policy. In addition, Yusuf was a graduate fellow at the Center for Information and Technology Policy at Princeton University. As graduate fellow he studied smart city technology and wrote about the use of data visualizations in policy formulations.

Yusuf currently serves as the Bradbury Dyer ’64 Director of of Entrepreneurship and Innovation at Lafayette College. He leads the college’s strategic efforts to integrate innovation and entrepreneurship into the liberal arts experience.

Keynote speaker Yusuf Dahl was awarded fellowships from Google to expand wireless access in Boston. As well as Tata Consultancy Services to work on emerging technology issues in Kolkata, India. He also worked as a consultant to the Chan Zuckerberg backed startup Andela Talent Accelerator. Where he worked to build world class software development teams in Lagos, Nigeria.

    Redemption through education

    • At 18 years old Yusuf was sentenced to Prison for 10 1/2 years for the distribution of drugs. Determined to become more than a statistic Yusuf taught himself computer repair and programming while incarcerated, learning enough to earn several Microsoft certifications upon his release. He would go on to earn a degree from Princeton University, a fellowships from Google and Tata Consultancy Services where he worked in Kolkata India. Yusuf currently serves as the director of Innovation and Entrepreneurship at Lafayette where he has taught both entrepreneurship and public policy courses.
