Alex Soojung-Kim is an ideal researcher and research director. He is highly collaborative, respectful of others' ideas, and able to draw connections and discern complex patterns. He can also work independently when necessary, stepping back to synthesize across an array of arguments. He is one of the only thinkers I've ever met who can think 7 dimensions deep AND 7 dimensions wide on just about every subject.

Alex is one of the smartest people I have worked with at the Institute for the Future. He has great ideas and is a great writer. He is extremely knowledgeable about the history of science and knowledge, and the future of science and technology. Alex has been critical in helping the institute forecast the future of science and technology as it is evolving across the globe. You can ask Alex about anything on science and technology, and it is quite likely that he would have read about the subject or point you towards the right sources. Alex has great professorial qualities -- he is good at explaining complex ideas in simple language, he is a patient listener and is always willing to help. It was great to have Alex at meetings, he has a great sense of humor and can enliven even the toughest meetings. He is a problem solver and is always ready to jump in and help others.

Alex provided outstanding guidance to a project that aimed to understand the creation, evolution and sustainability of carbon credit and trading markets. He recommended reading William Cronon's Nature's Metropolis, this proved to be a solid basis to establish how another game changer - the Chicago Board of Trade - was created and how our knowledge and experiences should be considered when developing new systems to deal with our current challenges.

Contemplative Computing: How to Redesign Your Relationship With Technology.

We live in a world saturated with devices, each competing for our attention. The constant barrage of emails, notifications, tweets, updates, and messages erodes our capacity to focus, steals our time, and can stunt the social and mental development of children. But is there an alternative? In this talk, I’ll explain why our relationships with our devices are so profound; explore the strategies technology and media companies use to capture and commodify our attention; and show how we can redesign our relationships with technology to help be more focused and mindful, rather than perpetually distracted.
