Keeping brands distinctive in the age of AI
AI is changing how organisations create, communicate and make decisions. But as more companies adopt the same models and tools, a new problem is emerging: everyone is starting to sound the same.
Ben Afia helps organisations solve that problem.
A brand and AI strategist with 30 years of experience, Ben focuses on how organisations can use AI to amplify what makes them different rather than erase it. His work brings together brand strategy, AI governance, marketing, culture and practical implementation, giving leaders and marketing teams a clear way to think about AI while helping them put it to work.
Book speaker Ben Afia for an event where audiences need more than predictions about the future of artificial intelligence. His keynotes and workshops are designed to leave people clear about what they can do about AI and confident enough to start doing it.
Ben brings hands-on AI capability rather than approaching the subject purely from theory. He is an alumnus of SmarterX’s AI Academy and a Fellow of the Professional Speaking Association, combining current AI knowledge with decades of experience helping large organisations navigate change.
From AI governance to AI agents
Ben Afia is currently leading a multi-year programme for a Fortune 500 life science company, transforming the organisation’s approach to brand governance.
The challenge was familiar: around 90 brand guidance documents existed, but marketers were not reading or using them effectively. Ben’s work is turning that complex library of guidance into a team of AI agents that marketers can actually use.
The programme is now rolling out to 400 marketers and is supported by training and change management. It is a practical example of the opportunity Ben explores on stage: AI can make expertise and governance easier to access, but organisations need to design the technology around how people really work.
For marketing teams, this creates a different conversation about AI. The question is no longer simply whether employees should use it. The more useful questions are how AI should represent the brand, how governance can be embedded into everyday workflows, and how organisations can increase speed and capability without becoming generic.
Ben helps audiences understand those questions and gives them practical ways to respond.
30 years of brand transformation
Ben’s work with AI builds on three decades of experience in brands, communication and culture transformation. He has worked with organisations including Vodafone, Aviva, Google, AirBP, E.ON, Boots, Aldermore Bank and Legal & General.
His work has ranged from customer service transformation to international training and large-scale culture programmes.
At Vodafone, Ben helped transform customer service for 1,000 agents, contributing to an increase in NPS of 15–20 points. For Aviva, he trained 20,000 people across 28 countries. His work with E.ON’s culture transformation reached 16,000 people.
These experiences give Ben a perspective on AI that goes beyond technology. He understands that transformation succeeds when people can translate an organisation’s ambitions into the decisions, conversations and actions they make every day.
That same principle matters as businesses introduce AI. A sophisticated AI strategy has limited value if employees cannot use it confidently or if the resulting output strips away the character of the organisation. Ben connects technology with the human realities of brands and organisational change.
Keynotes that turn AI into action
Ben Afia speaks at leadership offsites, marketing conferences and CEO and board-level events across sectors including energy, finance, healthcare and telecoms. His talks are designed for organisations that want to understand what AI means in practice and make better decisions about how they use it.
His keynotes and workshops include:
- How to Stop AI from Erasing Your Brand – exploring how organisations can benefit from generative AI while protecting and strengthening the distinctiveness that makes their brand recognisable.
- Your Next Hire Won’t Be Human – examining the arrival of AI agents and what they mean for teams, organisations and the way work gets done.
- Brief. Build. Back. – a hands-on workshop that moves participants from talking about AI to working with it, building practical confidence and capability.
Across these sessions, Ben combines strategic thinking with practical application. Audiences gain a clearer understanding of where AI can create value, where it can create risks for brand distinctiveness and how teams can begin building useful AI capability.
His approach is particularly relevant for marketing and leadership teams facing pressure to move quickly with AI while still protecting the qualities, standards and character that customers associate with their organisation.
The human side of business and AI
Ben Afia has run his own consultancy since 2004 and is the author of The Human Business: How to Love Your Customers So They Love You Back. His long-standing focus on customers, communication and organisational culture provides an important foundation for his current work with artificial intelligence.
Technology changes, but organisations still need to understand how people experience their brand. As AI becomes embedded in marketing, communication and everyday work, maintaining that human understanding becomes increasingly important.
Ben’s perspective connects these two worlds. He understands the possibilities of AI, while recognising that efficiency alone does not create a distinctive organisation. The goal is to use technology in a way that strengthens the qualities people already value.
Book Ben Afia for your event to give marketing teams, senior leaders and decision-makers a practical perspective on AI governance, AI-enabled marketing and brand distinctiveness. Whether the challenge is introducing AI agents, making brand governance useful, building confidence across a team or preventing AI-generated content from becoming generic, Ben helps audiences understand what to do next – and gives them the confidence to do it.
