Her combination of academic expertise and extensive consultancy experience enables her to explore leadership through both a research-based and organisational perspective.
Book speaker Beverly Alimo-Metcalfe for your event to explore what engaging leadership means in practice and why inclusion, ethics and employee engagement matter to leadership at every level of an organisation.
Inclusive leadership and diversity
A central theme throughout Beverly Alimo-Metcalfe's career has been the ethical application of inclusive leadership. She is passionate about ensuring that leadership is considered across all levels of an organisation rather than being confined to those in the most senior positions.
Diversity and leadership have also played an important role in her research and professional work. Beverly is a Patron of Women in Management and has contributed her expertise to a range of initiatives addressing gender, ethnicity and opportunity within management and leadership.
She served as Special Advisor on Women in Management to the Department of Health's NHS Executive Women's Unit in connection with its response to the Opportunity 2000 initiatives. She was also an Advisory Group Member for The King's Fund Senior Management Development Programme for Ethnic Minority Women in the NHS and a Member of the Commission for Racial Equality's Transformation Team.
Her experience also includes serving as a Member of the Register with special reference to Women in Management and as a Member of the Editorial Advisory Board for the international journal Women in Management Review and Abstracts.
Research and leadership expertise
Beverly Alimo-Metcalfe has a strong academic background underpinning her work with leadership and organisations. She obtained a master's degree in the sociology and psychology of education and a PhD focusing on the Microskills of Leadership. She also holds an MBA and is a Chartered Organisational Psychologist.
Across more than 25 years in research and consultancy, she has supported the leadership development of individuals while helping organisations strengthen their wider leadership capacity. Her work brings together organisational psychology, leadership studies, diversity and employee engagement, providing a broad perspective on how leadership operates within complex organisations.
Her professional experience has included a number of influential advisory and public-sector roles:
- Member of the founding 'Guru Group' of the UK Government-sponsored MacLeod Review of Employee Engagement.
- Member of the British Government's Training Agency Advisory Board on Management Education.
- Member of the Council for National Academic Awards.
- Special Advisor on Women in Management to the Department of Health's NHS Executive Women's Unit.
- Advisory Group Member for The King's Fund Senior Management Development Programme for Ethnic Minority Women in the NHS.
- Member of the Commission for Racial Equality's Transformation Team.
These roles complement her academic research and consultancy and reflect the breadth of her involvement in leadership, management education, employee engagement, diversity and organisational development.
Leadership, gender and engagement
Beverly's expertise has also brought her into public discussions about leadership, gender and organisations. She has appeared on the BBC, including BBC Woman's Hour, where she discussed gender and leadership. She has also appeared on the BBC Sunday Programme to discuss what religions can learn from business.
Her work on employee engagement extends to her membership of the founding 'Guru Group' of the UK Government-sponsored MacLeod Review of Employee Engagement. This experience sits naturally alongside her wider research into engaging leadership and the conditions that can support greater leadership capacity within organisations.
Rather than treating leadership simply as a matter of personality or charisma, Beverly's work provides an opportunity to examine leadership through engagement, inclusion and relationships. This perspective is particularly relevant for organisations seeking to understand how leadership behaviour can connect with employee engagement and organisational culture.
