Cristian Mungiu is one of Romania’s most internationally acclaimed filmmakers, known for cinema that combines precise storytelling with an unflinching examination of human behavior and society.

His international breakthrough came in 2007 with 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days, a stark drama set during the final years of Communist Romania. The film won the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival and became a defining work of the Romanian New Wave.

Nearly two decades later, in May 2026, Mungiu received the Palme d'Or for Fjord, his English-language feature debut starring Sebastian Stan and Renate Reinsve.

From Iași to Cannes

Born in Iași, Romania, in 1968, Cristian Mungiu first studied English literature before training in film directing at the National University of Theatre and Film, UNATC, in Bucharest.

His work has since earned recognition at some of the world's most prestigious film festivals. Beyond the Hills received the Best Screenplay award at Cannes in 2012, while Graduation earned Mungiu the Best Director award in 2016. His 2022 film R.M.N. continued his exploration of complex social and cultural questions.

Through subjects ranging from the legacy of Communist Romania to religious extremism, corruption and xenophobia, Mungiu examines how individuals make decisions within complicated social environments. Since 2016, he has also been a voting member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, AMPAS.
