High-altitude mountaineer, dentist and record-setting Romanian climber

Horia Colibășanu is a high-altitude mountaineer whose achievements have placed him among the most prominent figures in Romanian climbing. A dentist by profession and the owner of the Ascendent dental clinic in Timișoara, Horia has summited 11 of the world’s 14 mountains above 8,000 meters, climbing in pure alpine style without supplementary oxygen or high-altitude Sherpa support. From becoming the first Romanian to summit K2 without bottled oxygen to reaching Everest via the north route under the same conditions, his career offers a remarkable perspective on preparation, resilience, risk and decision-making when the consequences are real.

Horia Colibășanu: A life at high altitude

Horia Colibășanu is widely regarded as Romania’s greatest high-altitude mountaineer. His story combines two worlds that at first seem far apart. He is a dentist by profession and runs the Ascendent dental clinic in Timișoara, while simultaneously pursuing some of the most demanding objectives in high-altitude mountaineering.

Horia began climbing outside Romania at the age of 21. Since then, he has built an extraordinary record on the world’s highest mountains. He has summited 11 of the planet’s 14 peaks above 8,000 meters, consistently choosing a demanding approach: pure alpine style, without supplementary oxygen and without high-altitude Sherpa support.

This commitment makes his story about much more than reaching summits. Every expedition requires physical preparation, patience, sound judgment and the ability to make clear decisions in an environment where conditions can change rapidly. Horia’s experiences offer a compelling perspective on ambition and resilience, but equally on knowing where the limits are.

From K2 to Everest

One of Horia Colibășanu’s defining achievements came in 2004. At 27, he became the first Romanian to summit K2 without bottled oxygen. The ascent is widely regarded as the most important feat in Romanian mountaineering history and established Horia as a major figure in the country’s climbing community.

Over the following years, he continued adding some of the world’s highest and most challenging mountains to his record. His achievements include:

  • K2 in 2004, becoming the first Romanian to summit without bottled oxygen
  • Manaslu in 2006, a first Romanian ascent
  • Dhaulagiri in 2007, a first Romanian ascent
  • Annapurna in 2010, a first Romanian ascent
  • Makalu in 2011
  • Lhotse in 2013, a first Romanian ascent
  • Shishapangma in 2014
  • Everest in 2017 without supplementary oxygen via the north route, a first for Romania
  • Kangchenjunga in 2022, a first Romanian ascent
  • Nanga Parbat on 4 July 2025, his 11th eight-thousander

Romanian press credits Horia as the only Romanian to have climbed all five of the world’s most dangerous 8,000-meter peaks: K2, Annapurna, Dhaulagiri, Kangchenjunga and Nanga Parbat.

Only Gasherbrum I, Gasherbrum II and Cho Oyu remain in his pursuit of all 14 eight-thousanders. Yet that goal has never meant reaching a summit at any cost.

Knowing when to turn back

The mountains have given Horia Colibășanu an unusually direct education in risk. Success at extreme altitude depends on determination, but determination without judgment can become dangerous.

Horia attempted Gasherbrum II in both 2024 and 2026. On both expeditions, he turned back because of avalanche risk rather than accepting a level of danger he considered unreasonable. His approach is captured clearly in his own words: “When conditions don’t let you go further, the only right decision is to turn back.”

It is a lesson with relevance far beyond mountaineering. Years of preparation can go into a single objective, creating enormous pressure to continue once the goal feels close. Horia’s experience demonstrates the importance of separating commitment from recklessness and recognizing when changing circumstances require a different decision.

Book speaker Horia Colibășanu for your event to hear a perspective on performance in which success is measured by more than reaching the original objective. His experiences show why preparation matters, why risk must constantly be reassessed and why turning back can sometimes be the strongest decision available.

Rescue, responsibility and recognition

Horia’s mountaineering career also includes an experience that brought teamwork and responsibility into sharp focus. In 2008, he took part in the attempted high-altitude rescue of fellow climber Iñaki Ochoa de Olza on Annapurna. The rescue effort later became the subject of the Spanish documentary “Pura Vida.”

For his role in the attempt, the British Alpine Club awarded Horia the “Spirit of Mountaineering” prize at the Piolets d’Or in 2009. The recognition reflects a dimension of mountaineering that summit statistics alone cannot capture: the responsibility climbers can carry for one another in some of the most hostile conditions on Earth.

Another historic moment followed in May 2017, when Horia became the first Romanian to summit Mount Everest without supplementary oxygen. He climbed via the north route, adding Everest to an already remarkable high-altitude career. The achievement was recognized with Romania’s National Order “Star of Romania,” Knight rank.

Horia is also an honorary citizen of both Timișoara and Slatina.

Behind the expeditions and records is a life that also includes a career, marriage and fatherhood. This broader side of Horia Colibășanu’s story was explored in the documentary “Superhombre” from 2019/2020, which followed him through the 2016 Manaslu and 2017 Everest expeditions and portrayed him as a climber, husband and father.

That combination gives Horia a distinctive platform as a speaker. His experiences are rooted in situations where uncertainty is unavoidable, resources are limited and decisions have immediate consequences. The mountains demand discipline before the expedition begins and adaptability once reality stops matching the plan.

His story opens conversations about resilience, preparation, teamwork, responsibility and performing under pressure. It also challenges a familiar idea about ambition: that persistence always means continuing forward. Across Horia’s career, some of the most important decisions have involved recognizing when the conditions have changed and having the discipline to respond accordingly.

When you book Horia Colibășanu for your event, audiences enter a world of K2, Everest, Annapurna, Kangchenjunga, Nanga Parbat and other legendary peaks through the perspective of someone who has experienced them without supplementary oxygen. His keynote talks translate those experiences into human lessons about pursuing difficult goals, managing risk and remaining clear-headed when pressure is at its highest.

Keynotes

Keynote by Horia Colibășanu:

Decisions at the Edge

What does it take to make the right decision when years of preparation, personal ambition and an entire expedition are on the line?

Horia Colibășanu takes audiences into a world few people will ever experience: above 8,000 meters, without supplementary oxygen, where conditions can change in minutes and every decision matters.

Drawing on more than two decades of high-altitude mountaineering and 11 summits of the world’s 14 eight-thousanders, Horia shares the lessons that have shaped his approach to risk, leadership, discipline and performance. His stories from K2, Everest, Annapurna and other legendary peaks reveal that reaching the summit is only part of the challenge. Knowing when to continue, when to change the plan and when to turn back can be even more important.

At the same time, Horia has built a professional career as a dentist and runs his own clinic in Timișoara. His keynote connects these very different worlds and explores what it takes to pursue an extraordinary ambition while maintaining the responsibilities of everyday professional and family life.

  • From the dental chair to the Himalayas
For more than 20 years, Horia has combined a demanding profession with world-class mountaineering. He explores how preparation, priorities and long-term commitment make it possible to pursue ambitious goals without putting the rest of life on hold.
  • The discipline of unfinished business
Eleven eight-thousanders are behind him, with three still remaining. Horia reflects on why unfinished goals can be powerful, how motivation changes over decades and why the final three peaks matter as much as the first eleven.

Audiences leave with a different perspective on resilience and performance: success is not simply about pushing harder. It is about preparing thoroughly, understanding risk, trusting your judgment and having the discipline to make the right decision when circumstances change.
