J.D. Schramm – Leadership communication that drives action
J.D. Schramm has built his career helping leaders communicate with clarity when the stakes are highest. His work sits at the intersection of leadership, strategy, and communication, where messages are more than words—they shape decisions, mobilize teams, and influence outcomes.
Currently teaching in the master’s program at the University of Southern California, JD previously served as a lecturer in management at Stanford Graduate School of Business. During his time at Stanford, he helped shape the school’s approach to communication education, supporting leaders in developing the skills needed to speak with confidence, purpose, and impact.
One of his most influential contributions was leading the development and launch of the Mastery in Communication Initiative, an effort designed to strengthen communication as a core leadership capability. Through this work, JD helped thousands of students and executives sharpen their ability to communicate in complex and high-pressure situations.
High-stakes communication
JD’s work focuses on what he calls high-stakes communication. These are moments where communication carries real consequences—when leaders must secure investment, present bold strategies, guide organizations through change, or inspire people to act.
His approach centers on aligning three essential elements:
Communication, in JD’s view, should never be measured only by what is said. Its real value lies in what changes as a result.
By helping leaders refine their messaging and understand their audience, JD enables organizations to translate complexity into clarity. This ability has helped clients advance major organizational initiatives, secure significant funding, and mobilize stakeholders around scientific, financial, and social challenges.
From Stanford classrooms to global stages
During his time at Stanford Graduate School of Business, JD co-founded LOWKeynotes, a program where students design and deliver nine-minute TED-style talks in front of live audiences. Participants receive professional communication coaching as they prepare their talks, developing the skills needed to present bold ideas with clarity and confidence.
The program became a powerful platform for emerging leaders to practice persuasive storytelling and public speaking—skills that continue to define JD’s approach to communication coaching.
JD himself has spoken at TED and TEDx events, and he has coached numerous leaders as they prepared their own TED-style talks. His work blends academic insight with practical experience, giving audiences tools they can apply immediately in their leadership roles.
Trusted by leading organizations
Organizations across industries turn to JD when communication must be precise, persuasive, and impactful. His clients include global technology firms, financial institutions, and leadership networks that depend on clear communication to drive innovation and growth.
He has worked with organizations including the Aspen Institute Presidential Fellows for Community College Excellence, YPO, Meta, PayPal, Handshake, CAE, Gilead, Facebook, Google, Genentech, Jane Street Financial, AQR Capital, Adams Street Partners, Qualtrics, Ciena, and Breakline.
In these engagements, JD helps leaders sharpen their message, understand their audience, and present ideas in ways that inspire alignment and momentum.
Communication shaped by resilience
JD’s perspective on leadership communication is also grounded in personal experience. His own journey of resilience and reinvention has shaped his belief that communication mastery is a skill anyone can learn.
Beyond his professional work, JD is deeply engaged in advocacy and community initiatives. He is an active member of the LGBTQ community and supports causes including suicide prevention, foster care services, and HIV/AIDS research.
These experiences inform his work with leaders, reminding audiences that communication is not simply about delivering information. It is about connecting with people, building trust, and creating the conditions for meaningful change.
Education and personal life
JD holds an Ed.D. in higher education leadership from the University of Pennsylvania, an MBA from NYU’s Stern School of Business, and a BFA in theater from Emporia State University in Kansas. This unique combination of leadership, business, and performance training informs his engaging and practical speaking style.
He lives in San Francisco with his husband, Rev. Ken Daigle, where they are raising three very active children.
Organizations that book J.D. Schramm for their events gain more than a speaker. They gain a guide to clearer thinking, stronger leadership communication, and messages that truly move people to act.
