Shivani Uberoi on Authenticity and Belonging
Shivani is the author of Unlocking Authenticity: Why We Hide Who We Are at Work and How to Redefine Culture from the Inside Out. The book explores the hidden costs of suppression, self-censorship and identity safety in the workplace, examining how these factors influence wellbeing, performance and leadership.
Drawing on interviews, research and lived experience, Shivani highlights the tension many individuals face between fitting in and being authentic. Her work speaks to women, individuals from ethnically diverse communities, neurodivergent professionals and others who may feel different from the perceived norm.
Her message is both personal and universal. Audiences leave with a deeper understanding of why belonging matters and how organisations can create cultures where authenticity becomes a strength rather than a risk.
From Finance Leader to Culture Change Expert
Before launching The Wallflower Academy, Shivani spent more than a decade at Sky. Her career began in finance after qualifying as a Chartered Accountant through PwC. Holding a degree in Economics and Accounting, she built a successful career before transitioning into inclusion, leadership and culture change.
At Sky, Shivani led the company's gender equality strategy across a workforce of more than 26,000 employees. She founded Women@Sky, co-founded Multiculture@Sky and helped shape initiatives that contributed to Sky being recognised as one of the UK's most inclusive employers.
This combination of commercial experience and culture expertise gives Shivani a valuable perspective. She understands organisational realities while recognising the importance of creating environments where people can perform at their best.
Why Fitting In Will Screw You Up
Shivani's TEDx talk, Why Fitting In Will Screw You Up, sparked important conversations around identity, belonging and workplace culture. The talk became the foundation for much of her speaking and advisory work and continues to resonate with audiences across sectors.
Through humour, honesty and compelling storytelling, Shivani explores the personal cost of constantly adapting ourselves to fit expectations. She demonstrates how hiding parts of our identity affects confidence, wellbeing and performance, while also limiting innovation, collaboration and organisational success.
Her keynote presentations encourage audiences to rethink assumptions about inclusion and move beyond the idea that fitting in should be the goal. Instead, she advocates for cultures where difference is valued and people feel safe to contribute their full potential.
