As an NBA player, Brian Grant was famous for his fearless attitude and tenacious rebounding on the court. He played for five teams during his 12-year career. His mission today is to change lives as a philanthropist, speaker, and patient who insists on excelling with Parkinson's disease. He inspires people to become their best version even when it's seemingly impossible. Having learned from his coaches that it's always possible to control your effort but impossible to always control the ball, Brian is out to show us that although good life involves breaking a sweat, the results are worth it.

Do you know why Brian is emotionally attached to Xavier University? Because that’s where he cut his teeth as a professional basketball player. While at the institution, he won the Player of the Year award for the Midwestern Collegiate Conference on two occasions. Following this success, Brian was drafted by the Sacramento Kings in 1994. After a successful spell with the team, he continued his playing career with other teams, including the Los Angeles Lakers, Miami Heat, Portland Trail Blazers, and Phoenix Suns.

Brian’s playing career was characterised by several acts of charity to his community, helping sick families and the underprivileged. He would go on to win the J. Walter Kennedy Citizenship Award. He retired from professional basketball in 2006, only to be diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease two years later. How did he receive the news? Well, it was hard for him to accept the doctor’s report. How would his athletic body push through the pain, after all?

With the disease, Grant realised that he had one option; to determinedly work his way to a healthy life. This determination gave birth to the Brian Grant Foundation in 2010. The foundation empowers Parkinson’s patients to lead active, fulfilling lives.
