Artificial intelligence and human stupidity: Bust myths about Hype & Hysteria and build real value for business and society

Are you tired of hearing the scarytales about a distant future where Singularity rules the world, humans are mere servants, and we are all subject to the whims of a ubiquitous artificial intelligence? Late 2022 chatGPT woke the world up to the powers of generative AI, and tech leaders, politicians, and activists alike embarked upon a complex discourse about the need for and threats of regulation.

Let’s put the Hype & Hysteria aside for now and talk about what artificial intelligence is and not, her and now and five steps down the road. Let’s talk about how mathematics and statistics applied to large amounts of data can automate processes, completely change how you do business, and fuel innovation of new products and services. We also need to talk about the more challenging implications related to responsibility, ethics, cyber security, and sustainability. As a business leader and decision-maker, having a basic understanding of artificial intelligence should be as compulsory as having access to a computer.

Audience takeaways:

  • Concrete understanding of what artificial intelligence actually entails, including references to and explanations of recent developments.
  • Real-life examples that are relevant for your industry.
  • Recommendations for what you as a leader and decision-maker should focus on to realize value from AI applications, ensure responsible application, and make AI an integral and sustainable component in your business processes.

Trustworthy AI - and oxymoron?

Artificial intelligence is probably the most disruptive technological development in human history, and it is ubiquitous; from the face recognition on your smartphone to advanced public surveillance, from food production to medical research, from online shopping to human-like image and text generators. In addition, other emerging technologies such as the internet of things, blockchain, and virtual reality complement and interact with artificial intelligence to create even more immersive, complex, and disruptive products and services.

The launch of chatGPT fundamentally challenged the human trust in machines. ‘Hallucination’ is no longer merely a symptom of a very human illness, it is the characterisation of the mismatch between human expectations for how machines should work and what generative AI is really about. To overcome this misalignment between humans and machines, we need to fundamentally understand the implications of applying mathematics and statistics to large amounts of data.

Most business professionals think that AI is really exciting and cool. However, when confronted with our willingness to trust algorithms to make decisions about ourselves and on our behalf, we become much more reluctant and sceptical. How can companies approach the collection and algorithmic use of data in a way that builds and maintains trust? How can compliance with new AI regulations be ensured? And how can we navigate in a digital world where the borders between real and fake are continuously challenged?

Audience takeaways:

  • Concrete understanding of what artificial intelligence actually entails, including references to and explanations of recent developments.
  • Pragmatic overview of the new AI Act from the EU Commission (in process for final vote autumn 2023).
  • Recommendations for how to close the trust gap between humans and algorithms.

Digital is not (necessarily) sustainable

We tend to think that everything digital is sustainable, because data flying around on the wireless internet don’t leave any footprints. Or do they…? In this talk, Elin will blow your mind with some heart-breaking and stunning facts and anecdotes about the clash between digitalization and sustainability. At the same time, digital technologies such as cloud platforms, artificial intelligence, internet of things, and blockchain are indeed important for the sustainable future of businesses and societies.

How can you as a leader and decision-maker navigate in this overwhelming and complex landscape of digital technologies and sustainability issues? What do you need to understand, what are your options, and how much impact can you really make?

In this talk, Elin will give three actionable recommendations for how you as a leader can contribute to a smarter and more sustainable digital future.

I heard Elin talk about leadership in the age of technology at a breakfast seminar. Elin managed, with an excellent presentation, to clarify some key concepts around AI and machine learning and at the same time inspire, reassure and challenge those present (mostly leaders) about how management should be practiced in the future. I think many experienced that this was a useful session.
