Who is Bean Gill?
Bean Gill is a speaker, advocate, and entrepreneur whose life took an unexpected turn when she was suddenly paralyzed at the age of 30. Before that moment, she lived an active life, working as an X-ray technologist in a cardiac catheterization lab while pursuing passions like modeling, kickboxing, and weightlifting.
In 2012, everything shifted. After leaving an abusive relationship and facing major personal upheaval, Bean experienced a sudden spinal event during a trip to Las Vegas. Within minutes, she lost movement in her legs. Despite early medical expectations of recovery, weeks passed without improvement. Instead, new challenges emerged as her body began to spasm, forcing her to confront a completely different reality.
Life turned upside down
Bean’s journey was not only physical, it was deeply emotional. She went from independence to relying on others for basic movement. Simple actions like sitting up or getting out of bed became impossible without help.
The mental toll was significant. She struggled with her identity, her confidence, and her sense of self. Living in a world not designed for accessibility added another layer of frustration and isolation. At her lowest point, she openly admits she hated everything about her life.
Yet, this period became the foundation for transformation.
Taking control and rebuilding
Refusing to accept limitations placed on her, Bean took ownership of her recovery. She sought out alternative approaches, pushed her body in new ways, and gradually rebuilt both strength and confidence.
Her journey wasn’t about returning to who she was, it was about becoming someone new. Through perseverance, she explored adaptive sports and redefined her relationship with her body. What once felt like loss slowly became a source of strength.
Bean’s experience reshaped how she viewed adversity. Instead of seeing it as something to endure, she began to use it as a tool for growth and impact.
Changing the narrative on disability
Living with paralysis opened Bean’s eyes to the systemic barriers faced by people with disabilities. From physical inaccessibility to societal assumptions, she experienced firsthand how limiting the world can be when inclusion is not prioritized.
Rather than staying silent, she chose to speak up.
Bean uses her platform to challenge stigmas, shift perspectives, and advocate for a more inclusive society. Her voice is grounded in lived experience, making her message both authentic and impactful.
Building impact through ReYu
In 2017, Bean co-founded ReYu Paralysis Recovery Center alongside her Neuro-Exercise Specialist, starting with no capital but a clear mission.
The non-profit focuses on recovery, function, and possibility for individuals with spinal cord injuries and neurological disorders. Through innovative approaches, ReYu empowers people to push beyond expectations and reclaim independence.
Bean’s work through ReYu reflects her core belief: people are capable of far more than they are often told.
Recognition and media presence
Bean Gill’s influence extends beyond the stage. She starred in the CBC docuseries Push, a groundbreaking program that challenged how audiences view disability. The series marked a shift in representation, featuring a leading cast of individuals with disabilities in prime time television.
Her work has earned both local and national recognition. Among her accolades are Top 40 Under 40, the RBC Canadian Women Entrepreneur Award, and Global’s Woman of Vision Award. She has also been named one of Canada’s top 60 inspiring women by Mattel as part of Barbie’s 60th Anniversary.
As the reigning Miss Wheelchair Canada, Bean continues to represent strength, visibility, and change.
