He is Emeritus Professor at La Trobe University in Melbourne, where he served as Vice-Chancellor and President, and Distinguished Fellow at the Australia India Institute at the University of Melbourne. Beyond higher education, he has worked extensively with organisations including the World Bank, the Asian Development Bank and the European Union on higher education reform projects across Asia.
His work has also made him a respected commentator for newspapers, radio and television around the world. He continues writing for newspapers in India while contributing analysis to the Global Policy Journal in the United Kingdom.

Brian is the author or co-author of more than twenty-five books spanning history, biography, memoir, crime fiction and sport.
His publications include pioneering research into the social role of sport in Australia, influential studies of cricket and politics in Barbados and the Caribbean, books exploring Indian nationalism and Australia–India relations, biographies, historical crime writing and memoirs based on his experiences living and working in Syria immediately before the outbreak of civil war.
His influential work Saturday Afternoon Fever: Sport in the Australian Culture helped establish sport history as an important academic field, while Playing the Game: How Cricket Made Barbados was longlisted for the Cricket Media Club Book Awards in the United Kingdom.
His memoir A House in Damascus: Before the Fall received international gold and silver awards, while his crime novel A Straits Settlement became a finalist in New Zealand's prestigious Ngaio Marsh Awards. His recent historical true crime book Outcast: The Extraordinary Life and Death of Etienne Jean Brocher has also received outstanding critical reviews.
Alongside his publishing success, Brian has established himself as an internationally recognised screenwriter. His scripts have won competitions across Australia, Canada, France, India, Scotland, Singapore and the United Kingdom. Several screenplays are currently in production, including award-winning docudramas exploring South Asian migration to Australia and the remarkable life of Malaysian entertainer Kamahl.
