Ian Goldin is Professor of Globalisation and Development at Oxford University, Director of the Oxford Martin School and Professorial Fellow at the University’s Balliol College. The Oxford Martin School is the world’s leading interdisciplinary centre for deep research on a wide range of critical challenges, including finance, energy and environment, demography and health.
Ian Goldin previously was Vice President and Director of Policy at the World Bank. From 1995 to 2001 Ian was Chief Executive of the Development Bank of Southern Africa and Economic Advisor to President Mandela. Before that he was Principal Economist at the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) and Director of Trade, Environment and Sustainable Development at the OECD Development Centre in Paris.
With his two recent books Age of Discovery: Navigating the Risks and Rewards of Our New Renaissance and The Pursuit of Development: Economic Growth, Social Change, and Ideas, Ian Goldin proofed once more how his thoughts and ideas can shape the way we understand technological and economical developments of the future that are about to come.
Ian has a BSc and BA (Hons) degree from the University of Cape Town, a MSc from the London School of Economics, an AMP from INSEAD and a MA and DPhil from the University of Oxford. He has been knighted (Chevalier) by France, nominated by the World Economic Forum as a Global Leader for Tomorrow and published fourteen books, including his two most recent Globalization for Development: Meeting New Challenges (Oxford University Press) and Exceptional People: How Migration Shaped Our World and Will Define Our Future (Princeton University Press) and his best selling The Economics of Sustainable Development (Cambridge University Press).

What types of lessons and knowledge did you gain from your time as vice president of the world bank?
I gained deep insights into the key drivers of economic growth, was involved in the management of economic crises, and worked with leaders in finance around the world, including in all the key countries of Asia, Latin America and Asia in addressing key economic questions.
