Micke Hermansson began his teaching career 30 years ago in Sweden. In 2010 he experienced a very challenging class. Being disheartened and frustrated he decided to try some new ideas to get the students involved and wanting to learn. He called the concept ‘Grej of the day – GOTD (with ‘Grej’ meaning ‘one thing’ in Swedish).
GOTD involves three basic steps;
A Clue: Always given the day before the microlesson. This make the students curious and ready to learn.
A Microlesson: The next day, you give a microlesson (8-10 minutes) where you will present the facts in a storytelling manner. Included are also a WOW-ending!
A Retelling Part: The final step is for the students to go home and retell parts of the GOTD to their parents.
There are some spectacle pedagogical principles behind this method and Micke was amazed by the transformation of his students. GOTD soon became very popular in Scandinavia and is now being transmitted all around the world. Micke has won a number of awards for both GOTD and his public speaking. He has given more than 500 keynotes since 2015 and has written several books about Grej of the Day and how to lift your presentations.
