Interview with Nick Fry

Nick Fry has extensive experience in sports and commercial management. He is a sought after authority on team-building, leadership, and innovation. Read about what the former F1 team CEO has to say on teamwork, company culture, and what inspires him.

What do you think is the most important thing for building a high performance team?

Having the best people with clear objectives, great leadership and frequent communication.

What is one skill you think is needed to be a good negotiator?

Understanding that both sides need to win in one way or another.

What types of unique experiences have you had as a result of your profession?

A great training in different functions at Ford Motor; as CEO of medium sized businesses with Prodrive and Aston Martin but most of all winning the F1 World Championship as a Team Owner.  With all of them I worked with great people who taught me everything and provided huge opportunities.

Can you give 3 tips for creating a more innovative company culture?

Realising that everyone can contribute and that the best ideas are frequently at the ‘coal face’; developing a ‘no-blame’ culture so everyone is willing to try new things; communication – everyone wants to help and can.

How did you begin your speaking career?

Realising at an early stage at Ford that the more people who understood the challenges the more they were engaged in finding solutions.  Finding that I was quite good and enjoyed presenting to and engaging with groups of people.  A natural show-off I guess!

Who or what inspires you to do your best?

Tough problems and working alongside talented people who inspire you to raise your game and find innovative and sometimes counter-intuitive solutions.
