As a social media and branding expert, keynote speaker Sofie Sandell is able to inspire audiences and especially businesses on how to optimize digital branding strategies. With extensive experience in the field, Sofie can motivate others to become digital leaders and create new ideas.

Sofie Sandell is an renowned digital expert who speaks about leadership, social media, personal branding and online communication. In 2009 she became the first social media manager at a large publishing house in London. Her job description simply: ‘to introduce new digital media ideas’. This she did with delight and within one year she had trained almost every team in the building in how to use social media and what you can do with it.

Sofie has worked in a variety of different digital roles, has led numerous change projects and has seen both the good and bad side of digital development. Sofie’s passion is to inspire people to become digital leaders. Her philosophy is that you have to work on at least one digital project per year that scares you to keep your organization on top and on its toes.

In 2013 Sofie published her book Digital Leadership that focuses on digital leadership and creativity and how to manage the digital change.

Sofie’s experience working for brands such as Vodafone, Bureau Veritas, BSI and ITV has given her insight into the challenges of office politics as well as digital development. She has many stories and examples of good and bad management to share with her audience.

Furthermore Sofie has held a number of leadership roles in non-governmental organizations, and is an award-winning leader. In 2011 she was awarded the Freedom of the City of London in recognition of her service to the city. In 2008 she became the Local President for Junior Chamber International (JCI) London and got hundreds of people involved in a diverse range of projects. In 2010, as JCI UK’s Marketing and Website Director, she managed and set up 14 websites for JCI UK.

In 2013 she spoke at TEDxUCL and TEDxWomen and shared stories about digital leadership – empowering new ideas, and about digital leadership in action. She is a lecturer in digital branding at INSEEC University in London and runs four courses at the University. Sofie’s studies in leadership and behavioral science at Lund University in Sweden provide her with a solid foundation from which to develop the thoughts and ideas she shares with her audience.

In her talks, Sofie shares real-life stories that everyone can relate to. She talks about strategy in a no-nonsense way and she shares practical ‘how to’ advice. Sofie is a keen networker and is currently collaborating with several different people and organizations. Her aim is always to be up-to-date and to feel inspired about her topics. Outside of the digital world, some of her interests include improvisational theatre, art and classical music. She has exhibited her own abstract art in London twice and loves going to concerts.

Currently, Sofie is writing for the Adobe blog CMO.com and the London Business Journal and she has several new books in the pipeline.

Interview with Sofie Sandell

In your opinion, why is personal branding and online communication of great importance?

The way we communicate is changing and with all the new digital devices and social media tools now available it is becoming very complex. I believe that the ways in which we communicate affect our identity and the way we see others and ourselves. We are changing how we relate to each other in our relationships and the word ‘friend’ has a different meaning in a social media context.

I’ve attended lots of meetings where it later turned out that the person I had met, had googled me beforehand, which is why they had asked me such targeted questions. I find that a bit creepy, but we now make assumptions about people from what we read online. Assumptions and judgments take place on many levels and we share nonverbal signals about who we are on social media. This is just one reason why we must nurture our personal brand.

A good rule of thumb is that everything that is shared online will potentially be made public. I believe that in 2015 governments and companies that use online platforms must look deeper into security and privacy issues.

What makes your keynotes unique?

My story and experiences as the first person to take on the role of social media manager and website manager at a large publishing house is a key part of what I speak about. Also, my interest in behavioural science and leadership gives my talks a unique angle.

What message do you hope audiences walk away with?

I hope I inspire people to dare to explore digital tools and to leave their fear behind. Digital technology is a gift and we should use it wisely.

Do you have a favourite experience from your speaking career?

I’ve had many great experiences, I can’t really pick a single one. What makes a speaking experience stand out is when you connect well with the audience and I think that this is a feeling that is rewarding for both the speaker and the audience.

How do you inspire audiences to embrace new digital media ideas?

I share my wisdom and knowledge in many ways, often I talk about good and bad leadership behaviour and its consequences. In our lives we are faced with many choices and we can learn so much from other people’s decisions. For instance, in the digital era timing is crucial. If you choose to delay a digital investment for, say, six months, that is ages from a digital development perspective and your competitors will race ahead of you and the people working in digital development with you might leave and look for new opportunities.
